A glorious classic fantasy combining the magic of Ursula Le Guin's The Wizard of Earthsea with the epic Mastery of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Now reissued in gorgeous new livery. In a faraway land where members of the royal family are named for the virtues they embody, one young boy will become a walking enigma. Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Fitz, son of Chilvary Farseer, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world, friendless and lonely. Only his magical link with animals - the old art known as the Wit - gives him solace and companionship. But the Wit, if used too often, is a perilous magic, and one abhorred by the nobility. So when Fitz is finally adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways and embrace a new life of weaponry, scribbing, courtly manners; and how to kill a man secretly, as he trains to become a royal assassin.

'Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers ! what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics.' The Times

The Farseer Trilogy (whole collection) is a must for any fantasy fiction reader!!!
I have been reading fantasy for 20 years and would have to say this is the best I have ever read.
The characters are brilliant, the imagination this author has is beyong brilliant.
The whole collection is a must on all book shelves.
Would love one day to see this as a movie, she is right up there with the best.
If you ever want to disappear to another world this is a must for young & old.
Very addictive
The first book that got me addicted to Robin Hobbs works got me addicted so quickly and so totally it left my head spinning.
Nobody should be allowed to walk past this book on a shelve or here on Fishpond and not buy it. Seriously, it is that good. This book is the beginning of all the other books she has written, even those in other trilogys, start with this book but only if you wish to lose sleep and valuable time with your family!
Its such a brilliant book that it got me hooked on to this series and all the series that followed this.
It took me a while to get into in the beginning, but I liked the way how it set the background for us so really I'd have it no other way. So by the end, I have to admit I was desperately searching for the next book!
I'd definitely recommend this book to any readers, I believe that (yes!) it would appeal to almost every audience!
This book is incredible, and it only gets better the further into the series you get. It was a little difficult to get into, I'll admit, but that bit of effort in the beginning to set up the story was so worth the next WEEK of my life dedicated to not only this book, but the rest in the trilogy, and the following trilogies after that. I highly recommend Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice to everyone. It's an amazing story, and the characters will stay with you for life.
What I found really fascinating about this book was that the characters are so well drawn that you believe and encourage every decision they make - so much so that you feel a little ashamed when those choices prove to have been the wrong ones. The author draws you into their minds so well that you have such an emotional investment that you are cheering for them all the way.
Great read, couldnt put it down.
Fantastic book. The concept of the wit and the skill are enthralling and this was impossible to put down, although a rather dark book and a ravaged hero. The sort of book you stay up till four in the morning to finish and then regret doing simply because it is finished and the next not to hand.
This book is so very addictive, one of the very few that I actually lost sleep reading. Fritz's tale is so compelling you will find yourself re reading this book, agonising over his decisions and elated over his triumphs. You will also very very badly wish the main bad guy will die a horrible death.
