Sartre is a household name, a good part of his success is his a shift from proper philosophy being a classroom endeavour, to one that can teach and help every woman or man in the world, which is due. But Being and Nothingness marks his interaction, on as far a level as he is able, with the tradition of philosophy, especially with Heidegger. This means that for someone interested in Sartre, who does not have a good many years of education and reading in philosophy behind them, this book, his most well known, is the worst place to start. It may turn you off him, which would be a shame, as he has a lot to offer. Read Nausea, his first novel, and a collection of his plays first. Read things like 'Existentialism is Humanism' which is a short lecture that's all over the internet or in Walter Kaufman's existentialism collection. And then, if you're keen, and have the time, familiarise yourself with Being and Time, with phenomenology as a school, and attack Being and Nothingness.
