England, 1937. When Georgie Franklyn's father dies suddenly, leaving a mountain of debt, artistic Georgie turns to her dear friend James Bartlett for comfort. He has long wished to make her his wife, and she decides to accept his proposal. But their tentative relationship is complicated by the presence of lonely Muriel, Georgie's much-loved stepmother who comes to live with them. Then Georgie finds work managing an art gallery on the seafront and meets Dominic Fraser. She stifles the attraction she feels towards Dom, but as storm-clouds gather and the country prepares for war, both decide to seize a last chance at happiness.
