In one of the most unique memoirs of addiction ever published, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx shares mesmerizing diary entries from the year he spiraled out of control in a haze of heroin and cocaine, presented alongside riveting commentary from people who were there at the time, and from Nikki himself. When Motley Crue was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. He spent days - sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers - in a coke and heroin-fueled daze. The highs were high, and Nikki's journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions. Here, Nikki shares those diary entries - some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre - and reflects on that time. Joining him are Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Bob Rock, and a host of ex-managers, ex-lovers, and more. Brutally honest, utterly riveting, and shockingly moving, The Heroin Diaries follows Nikki during the year he plunged to rock bottom - and his courageous decision to pick himself up and start living again.
From The Publisher:
Set against the frenzied world of heavy metal superstardom, the cofounder of the most legendary rock band of the eighties offers an unflinching and utterly gripping look at his own descent into drug addiction. Few bands were as influential as Motley Crue in making the 1980s the heavy metal decade. Theirs is a cyclonic story of runaway success and its price, blending outrageous record sales and arena headline tours with smashed up cars, jail sentences, models, drugs, breakups, reunions...and more breakups. In this candid memoir, Nikki Sixx--Motley Crue's bassist and main song writer--recounts the band's heyday. Optioned for a television series for VH-1, The Heroin Diaries takes readers along on one of the most breathless and harrowing rollercoaster rides in the history of pop music. At its heart lies the author's nightmare-come-true, a punishing heroin addiction that brought him and the band to the edge of losing much more than just their spot on the charts. The addiction led to a near fatal overdose which left Nikki clinically dead for a few minutes before being revived. Serving up snapshots of rock culture at its most manic, this insider's look at triumph and tragedy is every bit as explosive as the musical odyssey it chronicles. The timeline for this book is one year--Christmas 1986 to Christmas 1987.

This was a hard book to read - not because of his drug use, or the high use of graphics, but because each entry has comments from his friends/ex girlfriends with their recollection of the event or period. I'm not sure that the format works well - I thought some of the comments were a bit odd - one ex is now some sort of god-botherer so all her entries didn't really relate well to what he was saying - but it is a good read and an interesting insight to Nikki's life.
Okay, maybe it's not exactly fair to compare The Heroin Diaries to The Dirt (the Crue's collective autobiography), but it's a natural comparison, as A) the majority of those reading this book will have read The Dirt, and B) the author wouldn't have even thought of trying to publish this if not for the success of the Crue's chronicles. There are plenty more tales of debauchery in these so-called "diaries" (and come on, does anyone actually believe he was keeping a diary? I don't think so.), but there is also a lot of dull repetition regarding the the author's heroin use and withdrawals, and tons more nobody-loves-me crap about his childhood. If you've seen him promoting this book, he says he published these "diaries" in hopes of helping others to avoid the hell that he went through. Give me a break! Having read this, I can assure you he glamorizes his drug abuse throughout and is quite proud of the depravity of his former lifestyle (that's right--he reminds us once again that he "died" twice--just in case we forgot). I recommend instead dusting off your Crue albums and reading (or re-reading) The Dirt--it's a lot more fun.
This book is fantastic!! I think every teenager should read it so that they don't go through what Nikki did. He hasn't been afraid to publish the negative as well as the positive. This book is riveting, the only disappointing part is when you get to the end and have no more to read!
Motley fans get ready to see the famous hard rockin' Nikki Sixx in a whole new light. This book was both intriguing and insightful. Well written with the back and forth(like Dirt) from the past to the present day.A very brave book to write considering Motley Crew are still one of the top touring rock bands. You get to see a very different side to the fame and fortune. After you read this book listening to the lyric's of Motley will never be the same, knowing they were written by a man in such a bad place- A Heroin Addict- A very lonely man.
Nikki Sixx book is alil kinda like the dirt but it was fantastic.

Well worth buying it to see their adventures.
