It's 3 a.m. and Elizabeth Gilbert is sobbing on the bathroom floor. She's in her thirties, she has a husband, a house, they're trying for a baby - and she doesn't want any of it. A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance. So she travels to Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains twenty-five pounds, an ashram in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor, and Bali where a toothless medicine man of indeterminate age offers her a new path to peace: simply sit still and smile. And slowly happiness begins to creep up on her.

Oh, how wonderful! I laughed out loud, cried, and nodded my head over and over throughout this story of a woman's pilgrimage to find herself. She writes so well. This is a great read for anyone who loves to travel, loves to eat, wants to know God, or is having a crisis of anykind in their lives. I didn't want it to end! Great stuff.
A riviting read, story of a woman who after a very nasty divorce has to find a way to repair herself, first to eat and on to italy for a few months to indulge the senses and revive both her body and spirit, then to india to pray and meditate and repair her physical self, now she is ready to love and love through every pore of her being an emotional read that will have you laughing, crying and sympathsing all at once.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt like the author was speaking to me and at times about me as I followed her journey of discovery. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels they are at a crossroad and not sure which path to take because for me it is reaffirming to know that your life is your own and your journey should lead where you want to go for your own happiness.
Such an easy read and so identifiable...nothing too heavy! Knocked it over in a couple of days on the beach. Having 108 chapters, it is so easy to pick up and put down again for those with a hectic schedule. Elizabeth will make you laugh and cry as you follow her personal journey of discovery and some may find much inspiration. Most enjoyable.
A great starting point if you're looking for some inspiration in your own life. One woman's view on pleasure, passion and spirituality and you'll keep thinking about it long after you've finished reading.
But don't worry, if you're just after a great read you won't be disappointed. Funny, moving and easy to relate to.
This is the very first non-fiction book that I have kept reading all the way through. It surprised and delighted me, and, though this sounds very naff, changed the way I think.
I was hugely disappointed with this book having had it recommended by a friend. The writer talks of her marriage break up/relationships and subsequent quest to break free of depression and "find herself". It's a painful journey of self-absorbed ramblings/travel journal. It's a one-woman play of needy spotlight grabbing that is continually on repeat. Half way through India I put it down realising that "One Woman's Search For Everything", was just that that and I didn't need to hear any more!
What I like about this book is that Elizabeth is so honest with her writing.
It is easy reading and very enjoyable, funny, sad & loving.
I would highly recommend it to any woman.
I have bought one for my future daughter-in-law as well, she is an avid reader and I'm sure will enjoy it as much as I am.
One of the best books I have read in years. I took this on to read on holiday and finished it in two days!! It will make you laugh; it will make you cry and nod with recognition over her feelings. It has now become one of my favourite books and I recommend it to all my friends.
I was a bit cynical about this book before I read it. However, I must say the cynicism dissipated as I got further into the book and couldnt put it down. I could really relate to the authors struggles. Wish I could go on such a journey of exploration!
