A #1 "New York Times" bestseller--the true story of a boy whose mother gave him away to be raised by her unorthodox psychiatrist--Burroughs's memoir is now a feature film from TriStar Pictures, scheduled for release in September and starring Annette Bening, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Joseph Fiennes.
From The Publisher:
The #1 "New York Times" Bestseller An "Entertainment Weekly" Top Ten Book of the Year Now a Major Motion Picture "Running with Scissors" is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her unorthodox psychiatrist who bore a striking resemblance to Santa Claus. So at the age of twelve, Burroughs found himself amidst Victorian squalor living with the doctor's bizarre family, and befriending a pedophile who resided in the backyard shed. The story of an outlaw childhood where rules were unheard of, and the Christmas tree stayed up all year round, where Valium was consumed like candy, and if things got dull an electroshock- therapy machine could provide entertainment. The funny, harrowing and bestselling account of an ordinary boy's survival under the most extraordinary circumstances.

Loved the book. Annette Bening is sure to be nominated again for her performance. She was so crazy, and yet so sympathetic that I found myself crying for her. Jill Clayburgh was a real treat. I'm very happy that these women have decided to let themselves show their age and not become the plastic people Hollywood has come to expect. The soundtrack was also great. I had the feeling that a lot of the actors involved in this movie were in it because they believed in the material, not only for the money. Gwynth Paltrow has a fun, small part, and it was good to see Kristin Chenowith on screen. A wonderful story, and a wonder that Mr. Burroughs survived the reality.
One of the most compelling and entertaining books about growing up gay in the 1970's, this brilliantly written book was on the New York Best Seller's List for many weeks, and deservedly so. Burroughs paints an entertaining (and sometimes alarming) picture of middle America in this auto-biographical account. The youngest child of extremely dysfunctional parents, the young Burroughs one day finds himself in the care of his mother's strange psychotherapist and equally bizarre family. A truly memorable book, now a film with Annette Benning.
Such a funny and hilarious book, with deep undertones of sexual abuse, child neglect, drug addiction, and generally obscenes ideas when it comes to raising children. Though the way it is written it is so funny and interesting, the sad parts, though touching don't bring you down. I highly reccomend this book to anyone, especially thouse who see a psychiatrist, or are getting help for mental health problems.
This one of the oddest most disturbing books I've read. The writing style is funkily fresh, considering the controversial nature. Its hard to understand how someone can remain that situation.
Underlying themes are gayness and child abuse. Its shocking, revealing yet a whole lot of fun. I dare you not to enjoy it.
