This book presents an engaging and insightful look at one family's attempts to change their consumer led lifestyle. It includes tips, anecdotes and recipes for the environmentally conscious. In the spirit of BBC2's "It's Not Easy Being Green", here is a winning account of one family's quest to begin changing the world from their own backyard. For six months, Linda Cockburn and her family grew, made, or bartered for their food, generated their own power, collected their own rainwater, and aimed not to spend a single penny. All to discover one thing - is domestic sustainability really possible in the modern world? The author's diary-style entries take you with her on a fascinating journey, and are full of facts, anecdotes, recipes, and advice for anyone interested in changing their consumer-led lifestyle.

I couldn't stop reading this book, ignoring my family around me and once it was read every purchase I made was analysed. How bad is it for the environment, what about packaging, do I need it, can I go without, can I make it myself, what of my daughters future. I now know each purchase I make contributes to some environment degradation, so I must choose and step with care.
Very thought provoking. This is the diary of a real life family without academic jargon. A family who tried their very best for a year to live with simply, with minimal environmental damage and waste. A family who missed junk food, smokes and the easy life but through their process learnt and taught so much.
This book has greatly influenced me in making better choices for my planet and family.
really enjoyed the diary format of a family trying to live sustainably and not spend much money for six months. great photo, relevant information and an inspiring read.
Wonderful down to earth view of living a sustainable lifestyle. Linda Cockburn regales us with the trials and tribulations of making the ultimate lifestyle choice for the planet.
I am not sure I am ready to embrace the self-sufficient lifestyle to THIS degree!! But I did enjoy reading how one Queensland family gave it their best shot. I didn't realize you can grow your own kitchen sponges - very interesting fact! I also enjoyed the goat fun/troubles they had, as well as reading about the trips to school using the bike! A funny and thought-provoking read!
I borrowed this book from a friend and couldn't stop reading it, it is fascinating. It certainly makes you stop and think what you can do to save the environment, save money, and to live simply. In a word - BRILLIANT!
I enjoyed following the progression of someone who attempted domestic sustainability but it didn't offer much info on how to follow a similar path. the diary format made me feel like she was trying to cash in on her newfound look at life rather than help the environment.
Still, a lot of the things mentioned in Living the good life has made me evaluate my own environmental awareness. B rilliant read for anyone considering helping the environment and save money.
I loved this book and devoured it entirely within two days (which is no mean feat when you consider I have two small children and a household to look after...). The thing I appreciated the most was the "we are real humans too" aspect of it - they had lapses, they weren't perfect. They had bad days and bad weather. But in all it was a stunning look at what was - and is - possible for one small family to do. A must read for anyone considering voluntary simplicity.
A fabulous glimpse at what living the good life really means. An idyllic way to live we think, but when reading the battles this family has had to endure you will probably think twice. Yet i found this very fascinating to read and sort of want to do it myself! So discover for yourself what it is really like to be self-sufficient.
