The true story of Betty Mahmoody's escape from Iran with her daughter after her Iranian husband attempted to turn a two-week vacation into a permanent relocation and a life of subservience for Betty and her daughter.
From The Publisher:
In August 1984, Michigan housewife Betty Mahmoody accompanied her husband to his native Iran for a two-week vacation. To her horror, she found herself and her four-year-old daughter, Mahtob, virtual prisoners of a man rededicated to his Shiite Moslem faith, in a land where women are near-slaves and Americans are despised. Their only hope for escape lay in a dangerous underground that would not take her child... Now the true story of this courageous woman and her breathtaking odyssey bursts upon the screen in the Pathe Entertainment production starring Academy Award-winner Sally Field! A Literary Guild Alternate Selection.

I could not put this book down once I had started. Which meant no clean clothes or dinners for my family!!! It is hard to get my head around that this is a true story and actually happens more that we will ever know. What a dilemma to face. I could never leave my children and have great respect for Betty Mahmoody.
wow, this is an absolutley terrifying tale. not common place i hope, but i know someone who had to smuggle herself out, after experiencing similar oppression in iran. very scary that someone you thought you knew could be that cruel, but it happens in normal divorce too, the children used as pawns. a riverting read.
I found this book very moving when i first read it some years ago - the central character seems to have been taken completely off guard by the conditions, expectations and treatment experienced by women in Iran. I know little else of iranian culture and i would not suggest that her experience is typical. As to comments that the novel is americocentric, that may be the case but her experience was a tragedy regardless of who is at fault.
This is such an inspirational story which mothers and daughters a like will love. After watching the movie I wanted more so I picked up this book....and was very impressed. This tear-jerking, emototional novel will require a book of tissues by your side but is well worth the read and you'll come away in thought, wanting to ponder the deeper issues in the book,
This is such an inspirational story of the survival of this magical and strong willed woman and her daughter. It shows what lengths a woman will go to to protect her children and what she is willing to endure to ensure their safety. After going through this whole ordeal she writes about it in such a descriptive way you feel like you are the woman and you are there trying to protect your child. This book really moved me it is a MUST READ!
this is such a great read for anyone, anywhere. this is such an inspirational tale too. it is about betty mahmoody, who goes with her husband and small daughter over to iran/iraq for a "holiday" as she is not allowed to return. this is a really chilling tale, and is a real warning to anyone wanting to marry someone from another country. MUST READ!!!!!!!!
One of the best books I have ever read, this is the story of an American woman who marries an Iranian man, only to find that things are not as they seemed. As her husband descends into mental illness, he takes the family to Iran in the middle of the Iran Iraq war, and holds them hostage. Betty faces two choices.. life with a mad man, or escape with her daughter through the mountains of Iran and Turkey in the middle of winter
this has to be the best book i've read to date. The true story of a woman and her child travelling to her husbands native Iran, where she would be trapped against her will by the man she married. What follows is the courageous effort to espace the country with her daughter and into safety.
A true story told so much better than the movie of the same name starring Sally Field. An American woman marries and Iranian man and has a child. She believes they are visiting his family in Iran, she arrives to be shocked at the opression of females in Iran and then discovers that her husband has tricked her and intends them to stay in Iran. She has an opportunity to leave Iran secretley, but refuses to leave without her daughter, hence the book's title.
