What do the bird king, the thing in the bathroom and the paraffin-oil koala have in common? They all inhabit the unique world of renowned artist, author and illustrator Shaun Tan. Collected from his working sketchbooks, with commentary by the artist, these ideas, studies and doodles offer a special insight into the imagination of this internationally acclaimed storyteller. The Bird King is a collection of sketches, random jottings, preliminary designs for book, film and theatre projects, sketchbook pages and drawings from life. Each of these represent some aspect of a working process, whereby stories generally evolve from visual research and free-wheeling doodles. They are also 'unfinished' pieces created in a single sitting, not originally intended for publication, and for that reason perhaps more revealing of a personal style (and particular obsessions) than other more polished artwork.
About the Author
Shaun Tan was born in 1974 and grew up in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. He graduated from the University of WA in 1995 with joint honours in Fine Arts and English Literature, and currently works full time as a freelance artist and author in Melbourne. Shaun began drawing and painting images for science fiction and horror stories in small-press magazines as a teenager, and has since become best known for books such as The Rabbits, The Red Tree, The Lost Thing, and the acclaimed wordless novel The Arrival

Unfortunately the book arrived damaged. I think this may have been partly due to the mail delivery person squashing it into my letterbox when it clearly didn't fit. I recommend labelling a hardback book package "DO NOT BEND" as this would have alerted the delivery person. So I was dissappointed as it was a gift.

For any aspiring artist, this is a MUST-HAVE book.
Peeking into any artist's sketchbook is inspiring, to see where the ideas germinate and to view raw talent, and this handsomely bound book of the sketches of such a talented illustrator is no exception.
Each image hints at a further story as to why or how these bizarre creatures came to inhabit such incredible landscapes and the fantastic characters are so beautifully hand-rendered which is a delight to view in this day of slick computer-generated imagery.
Shaun Tan has managed to retain his child-like imagination expressing the wonders of the world around us and indeed other worlds and has depicted them with such clarity and spotaneity that it is a delight to be drawn into his world.
This book is one of my most prized-possessions - and will inspire for a long time to come.
