I'm a beginner in make-up, and this book was NOT the book I was looking for. The manual did not give much details on how to apply make-up. It gave 'too' much detail on other things, like.. what SPF means, the different kinds of UV rays (do I need to know that there are rays called UVA, UVB and UVC??), and what do I need to do with a glossary of peptides, humectants or emollients? This is not supposed to be a science book, its supposed to be a MANUAL for makeup. The instructions it gave on applying makeup on different skin types looked almost the same, with the same instructions and applications, only with different colored models..how can I learn to do makeup from this?

Though I can say one good thing about this book.. the pictures are really really nice, vibrant, colorful.. as what you expect in a price of a book like this. But from beginner to pro? No, no, no..!

This book is amazing. Bobbi Brown is such a talented makeup artist and business women. I love the step by step guides with beautiful pictures as well as her advice on brushes to choose, what to have in your makeup bag and how to break into the industry. This book inspired me to take even more pride when doing my makeup, on a daily basis and for special occasions. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly interested in makeup.

This is a good all rounder book. It is good for beginners as it covers a lot of basic techniques.

I was sorely disappointed when I read this book after receiving it for Christmas.
Yes, the pictures were lovely, and the tips on how to actually apply make-up were quite good. But this book was lacking in many things that make a good make-up manual. Bobbi Brown seemed to miss out some of the most important things: What colours to use (yes, there was some of this, but it was extremely basic and not helpful/effective in the slightest) for different skin colours/different face shapes (eyes, nose, face shape etc.).
Most of the book was dedicated only to how to get somewhere in the make-up artist career, and not how to actually apply make-up. The actual make-up instructions were few.
So basically, I would recommend buying a different make-up manual, unless you are interested in starting your career in the make-up industry.

I also purchased this book for my daughter for her 16th birthday. She wants to be a make-up artist when she leaves school. She has been absolutely engrossed by the book and has given everyone 'make overs' and great advice. She really enjoyed the layout of the book and the section on business. A great buy for anyone interested in knowing the secrets!!!
