Based on a Gallup study of over two million people who have excelled in their careers, NOW, DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS uses a revolutionary programme to help readers discover their distinct talents and strengths. The product of a twenty-five year, multi-million pound effort to identify the most prevalent human talents, the StrengthsFinder programme introduces thirty-four talents or 'themes' and reveals how they can best be translated into personal and career success. Each copy of the book contains a unique password that gives the reader access to the StrengthsFinder Profile, a Web-based interview that analyses people's instinctive reactions and immediately presents them with their five most dominant strengths. Once readers know which of the thirty-four talent themes dominates their personality, they can make practical applications at three levels: as an individual, as a manager and within an organisation. Readers learn what kind of environments will allow them to flourish; how managers can better cultivate their employers' talents; and how almost all organisations inhibit the talents of their people and need to change.

The premise of this new management study, a follow-up to Buckingham's First, Break All the Rules (S. & S., 1999), is that the most effective method for motivating people is to build on their strengths rather than correcting their weaknesses. The authors, researchers at the Gallup Organization, have analyzed results of interviews conducted by Gallup of over 1.7 million employees from 101 companies and representing 63 countries. When asked, only 20 percent of these employees stated that they were using their strengths everyday. So that they can take a test revealing their strengths, readers are given access to the StrengthsFinder web site and a special ID number; once they learn their profile, they can read the analysis in the book. A description of each type is included, together with case studies, and managers are shown how to handle various types. This book offers a unique perspective on successful management strategy and developing employees' strengths. Recommended especially for public libraries, which should also consider Buckingham's First, Break All the Rules; students of business administration may also wish to consult this book.DLucy Heckman, St. John's Univ. This is apparently the first 'Strengths' book, there is an updated version out, so when you enter your code into the website, it doesn't work and takes you to an older web site with less features.
But, having said that, I got a lot out of this book. The explanations were good, I can see how it works to make you a better manager. It did leave me wanting more, of course, you have to pay a lot more to get more...
I loved "First Break All The Rules" and would strongly recommend it to anyone. So I was looking forward to "Now, Discover Your Strengths", and I'm sorry to say it is a major disappointment.
The bulk of this book outlines the strength dimensions identified by the authors. It contains a unique identifier to get you on to their website to do the Strengths Analysis. Great, I thought. BUT - The report you receive merely indicates which 5 strengths are your strongest, and repeats information on them from the book. So there is no analysis at all of how those strengths might work together and how you might maximise them. You can get your whole report - for an additional (large) fee - and you can get some individual coaching on your results - for a further additional (enormous) fee.
The book is basically one long advertisement for their chargeable services and if you've read First Break All The Rules this won't teach you anything new.
This book challenges the long-standing notion that people should spend more time working on their weaknesses than identifying and developing their strengths. It's a great read, and easy, and it has a practical, online component that reinforces everything you've learned.
It's a must for managers who aspire to be great managers, and for people who are interested in finding out what their skills are, and making the most of them in business and in everyday life.
"We can gain greater productivity by building on our strengths than correcting our weaknesses" is the main thrust of the book. This book is the standard in the industry, and based on Gallup Organization's interviews with over 1 million people. Thus, this is not just some "pop" psychology, but reliable information. Buckingham and Clifton have more recent books, but this is the best starting point in your learning about
Strengths-Based Organizations". I recommend others in the series as well, such as "First, Break All the Rules".
We are using this book in a telecourse with other coaches in the Professional Coaches Association of Michigan because the message is consistent with the coaching philosophy, so this is not simply a business book.
