Excellent book in the Hatchet series. This one is written from the point that Brian isn't rescued at the end of book one when the emergency beacon goes off (before winter). It imagines Brian has to survive winter in the wilderness and all the ensuing problems of trying to find shelter from the storms, find food and survive attacks from winter animals such as moose. It is incredibly exciting and so realistic, mainly because the author based a lot of the book on real life experiences. A fabulous series for children and adults who want an exciting, real life story.

This book is continuing on from the first in the series 'The Hatchet'
This book describes what would have happened if Brian hadn't been rescued from the wilderness, how he would have survived through the winter and what problemd he would have faced.
This book is just as great as 'The Hatchet' and has just as much detail.
I would recommend this book for older children to tenns but I think adults will enjoy reading it as well.

One of the two available second instalments in the wonderful “Hatchet” saga by Gary Paulsen
This book, along with “Hatchet the Call” is, in my opinion, some of the very best of Gary Paulsen’s splendid writing. It shows the ready the beauty and danger of the outdoors in its harshest season and give them the same thrill of achievement reading about Brian’s exploits as if they had accomplished them, themselves.
