As a child this book used to give me nightmares. I hated the though of ping being left behind all alone in the world and the though of the duck master spanking him with the cane horrified me. This is one book I would always push to the back of the book shelf and beg my mother not to read it to me. It is a classic tale set in a different era and I'm sure it is much loved by many children around the world, just not me. It is not a book that will be becoming part of my daughters home library.

Beautiful little book which follows the adventure of a little duck named ping. This book is used in the five in a row curriculum and has many learning values - eg geography, moral, language and art technique to just name a few. Great book which proves to continue to be a favourite with children and adults alike.

This is a sweet little story about a duck called Ping who lives on a boat on the Yangtze River. It is easy to read again and again to your child without getting bored, and the chances are that you will have warm memories of having this story read to you when you were a child. It’s a the mark of a classic when a book is still popular 70 years after its first publication.

This book has been ingrained on mind since being a small child where I cried that Ping was left all alone without his family. In fact, I still remember being told to stop it when I started tearing at when ping got the bamboo cane as crossed onto the boat. Stilla great read.

A simple story about choices, that is written so clearly that my 8 year old could really empathise with Ping. She followed his journey on the river and talked to me about how he was feeling and why he was choosing to hide, swim or search.
I loved this book as a child and am enjoying it again through my child.

I remembered loving this book as a child, but I couldn't remember the story itself. It was a real trip down memory lane and my three year old daughter enjoyed the stroll too (three times in half an hour). Our favourite parts were when Ping was set free by the little boy who recognised Ping's beauty and wanted to save it, and when Ping braved the smack to return to the middle of his family on board the boat.
Simple pictures and a lovely narratives just don't get tired even when they are old. My daughter has set out to find 'The Story about Ping' on the bookshelf since the day it arrived, so it has to rate highly.

I remember this book from my own childhood which is why I bought it. It was very nostalgic for me but I can understand now why I loved it as a child.
The illustrations are lovely and there is nothing as cute as a baby duck. It is set in China which is very exotic for children and there is a lot of repetition in the text which makes is a joy for pre-readers to learn and repeat.
There is a little bit of suspense where Ping is going to be a duck dinner but he is saved by the kindness of a child. A slightly moralistic theme leaves us all with a warm glow.
I'm so glad I got the chance to revisit this after all this years.

A unique tale of an adventuresome duck. When I was teaching the age for which this is written, it was a constant favourite. Simple ides which are refreshing in today's complex world, with a happy ending to remind all little ones that hear this, there are those who love and care for them and to whom they very special.

As a child, I loved this story and now as a kindergarten teacher, I love reading this story to my class. The pictures are beautiful and the story never gets boring. This is a favourite with both my two year old and my seven year old as well.
