My favourite childhood book, this story is about a young girl who finds her place in the world with the help of friends, foes, strangers and her cat Purr. It's a heartwarming story and always manages to put a smile on my face because it is written in a language which appeals to all ages, even though the intended audience is children. There is a charming beauty in its simplicity and it expresses in words that all can understand, someone's struggle to grow into the person they want to be.

A heartwarming story about a young orphan's survival and finding her place in life. Beetle, (short for dung beetle) survivies the cold winter by burrowing in the dung heaps but is rescued by a midwife who, although not sympathetic, needs a helping hand. By becoming the midwife's apprentice, Beetle has a new sense of purpose in her life, but must contened with many obstacles. This is a well crafted story to be enjoyed by young and old alike. The details of medieval life, medicine and supersititions are meticulously researched. A very good read and highly recommended!
