I press an ear to the wood - but there's no crackle. No smoke. Just deep, heavy breathing! And a curious dripping sound. My hand's on the door knob. Inside the room, somebody giggles - low, throaty, sadistic. There's a ripping sound, followed by snaps and crunches. My hand turns. The door opens. Hell is revealed." When Grubbs Grady first encounters Lord Loss and his evil minions, he learns three things: the world is vicious, magic is possible, demons are real. He thinks that he will never again witness such a terrible night of death and darkness! He is wrong.

I was a fan of the Saga of Darren Shan so I had to read this new series. I bought this book, and the audio version, as I couldn't be bothered reading after work (yes, I am not a kid). The book has well written, you can absolutely put yourself in Grubbs Grady's shoes, and imagine what his daily life is like, and then when the terror strikes you are captivated and on the 'edge of your seat' wondering what is going to happen next. Children and adults alike will enjoy this book, especially if they have wonderful imaginations and like something that might scare the pants of you! I have loaned my books out to 15 year old boys who have loved the series.
Being the very first book in Darren Shan's Demonata series, i opened up to the concept of reading this book. And i will have to warn you now that it has some rather shocking scenes in the book. The first few chapters are about how Grubbs Grady witnesses a tragity and becomes thrown into a mental hospital for saying it was demons and is highly drugged etc. But after this and Grubbs' uncle helps him back on his feet and into Dervish's house/mansion, the story really gets good and you finally understand why Grubbs saw the events within the first two chapters.
Overall, it is a really good book and i highly recommend it for any readers that are into Darren Shan.
