A wonderfully funny book that I have taken great pleasure in reading aloud to my class (just practice first - there are some real funny accents to use lol). The boys have enjoyed the story as much as the girls and we have producd wonderful work based on the book. - Highly reccommend to all ages.
A great introduction to Pratchett for younger readers, especially girls, although they might find some of the Scottish dialect a challenge at first! An uplifting adventure of growing-up and fulfilment that's full of his usual mix of warmth, comedy and excitment, there's plenty for the older reader too!
The little blue men are adorable, and as with all of Pratchett's writings, are well characterized and bought to life in this humorous tale. Whilst I realise that this particular title is aimed towards 'younger' readers, I would argue that most ages will still be able to appreciate Pratchett's excellent humour and story-telling ability in this book.
Tiffany has got to protect her family's small sheep farm from the might of the all powerful elf Queen, aided by only some small blue men and a rather handy fry pan. Of course, she's got the memory of her amazing grandmother to help her, and, to be fair, the six-inch-tall blue men are fond of stealing cows and knocking out grown men. So, no trouble, right?
Right.
FABULOUS! WONDERFUL! I LOVED IT! Who says it's a kids story?! As a huge fan of the Discworld witches, Tiffany is terrific, a true witch in Granny style! Already gifted with a healthy dose of 'headology', Tiffany unwittingly becomes the Kelda (head woman) of the nearest clan of Nac Mac Feegles, the wee free men of the title. Together, armed with a frying pan, they take on the Queen of the Faeries. With Granny and Nanny on their way, will they get there in time to save a seriously overmatched Tiffany?
This is the first (of currently) three novels starring Tiffany Aching and the Nac Mac Feegles (the wee free men of the title) it is actually a very straight forward and (for Terry Pratchett at least) surprising unoriginal story, Tiffany Aching is a very interesting character and the Nac Mac Feegles are funny (especially the cat baiting bits) but overall a bit disappointing.
I read hat full of sky first so I went looking for this book. the pixie like creatures are like little scottish men but they have an interesting view on what is right and wrong. their lives suddenly butt against a young girl who has a knack of looking after herself. you find out in the next book that this knack is a little more than that. a great coming of age story and very accessible recommended for teenage readers but great for adults.
