when young prince hamlet's father, king hamlet, is found dead, no one suspects foul play. that is, until the ghost of the recently deceased king appears to two guards and reveals (when they fetch the young prince) that it was actually hamlet's uncle, claudius who murdered him. hamlet then dedicates himself to avenge his father
