Ignore those that say these books are for kids; rather, they transcend all age limits. The story centres around the coming-of-age of Lyra, a precocious 11 year old who lives in a world that’s similar to ours, but with some striking differences. Will, the other focus of the story, lives in “our” world. In fact, as the story progresses, we see that there are numerous parallel worlds which become enmeshed through an extraordinary series of events. The story is like an inversion of Milton’s Paradise Lost, with references to a number of spiritual and religious themes, as well as alluding to a wide range of ideas from physics, theology, and phiilosophy. Pullman, an atheist, has drawn much criticism from certain organised religious groups for his treatment of such topics. It’s such a cliché, but you won’t be able to put these books down! This book is an addition to the His Dark Materials trilogy, and fans will really appreciate the little details in the book.
