Harry Potter is an ordinary boy who lives in a cupboard under the stairs at his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon's house, which he thinks is normal for someone like him who's parents have been killed in a 'car crash'. He is bullied by them and his fat, spoilt cousin Dudley, and lives a very unremarkable life with only the odd hiccup (like his hair growing back overnight!) to cause him much to think about. That is until an owl turns up with a letter addressed to Harry and all hell breaks loose! He is literally rescued by a world where nothing is as it seems and magic lessons are the order of the day. Read and find out how Harry discovers his true heritage at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, the reason behind his parents mysterious death, who is out to kill him, and how he uncovers the most amazing secret of all time, the fabled Philosopher's Stone! All this and muggles too. Now, what are they? This is Jo's first book and she has already written seven outlines for Harry's further adventures at Hogwarts. She lives in Edinburgh.

First time author of a book likely to catch the imagination of every child who picks it up. There's magic, humour, goodies, baddies, muggles (what are they?) and broomsticksIt's a book about good versus evil, self discovery, friendship and a good rollicking tale into the bargain!
This is a amazing story about a wizard named Harry Potter who is always battling danger in a fight for survival. I just love reading this book it's just so enjoyable. It is probably for nine year olds to about twenty-six year olds. It a very interesting world that Harry lives in but also very wonderful I would love to live in that sort of world.
This book is a great book. I really enjoyed reading it and everybody i know did as well. I also really enjoyed reading the following books. For some of the books in this series i sat there for hours and days just reading them, they were really interesting and addictive. Thank you J.K Rowling for writing these extrodinary books.
Ah, this book is a joy to read and discover the magical world that Harry comes to inhabit (at least for 3/4 of the year) - Diagon Alley, Platform 9 3/4, Hogwarts, owl post, Bertie Bott's every flavour bean, pumpkin juice, chocolate frogs, Quidditch.....I could go on and on!
I too took a while to buy and read this book as excessive hype tends to put me off, but 5 years and six books later I am ever so glad I gave it a go!
Don't let the hype put you off, read this book and decide for yourself!! Chances are you won't regret it.
the silly thing is: if i was asked by a prospective harry potter fan which book (of the harry potter series) they should read first, i would not recommend Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. the only reason i would do this is because it starts off rather slow. however is still great
first book in the 7 part series. We are introduced to the spell casting, magical world of wizards, witches, muggles and squibs. Harry Potter is famous, yet he lives unknowingly amongst muggles(non-magical humans). He believes that his parents died in a car crash, but what happens when his 11th birthday drwas near and he is scheduled to join others at Hogwatrs a school of witchcraft and wizardry.
this is the first book of a popular series. this book introduces us to a magical land and excites you right to the end of the book.an orphan called harry discovers he is a wizard and makes friends with other magicians called hermione and ron. they stick with him most of the time and help him solve the mystery of the philosophers stone. this is a very enjoyable book for everyone (well almost)
This is the start of what is a popular book series. This book introduces us to the wizarding world and keeps us entertained right up until the end with the adventures of Harry, Ron and Hermione. Throughout the three friends first year of Hogwarts they learn that magic isn't easy. They master simple spells and learn that danger may be lurking around every corner of the enchanted school.
This is a great read and you don't know what you are missing out on if you don't read the complete series.
You shouldnt have to read a review about this book to decide whether to read it or not, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's stone is the beginning of the best series ever written. Let JK Rowling take you into another reality where you find out that 11 year old orphan Harry Potter is a wizard and is to attend his first year of Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Once you start reading you can't stop!
A must read for all people really, it has a spellbinding story with a believable (even though far-fetched) premise. Harry is an orphan, who discovers he is a wizard. As he discovers the truth about himself, he makes friends and finds his place in the world. This book is brilliant for getting reluctant readers reading.... not to mention the many sequels which keep them reading!!!
