From The Publisher:
In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for six hundred years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve that star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for six hundred years. In Stardust, Neil Gaiman employs an unusual story telling style that takes a while to get used to, but is well worth the effort.
The reality in which the story is set is only sketchily drawn, yet at the same time so comprehensively imagined for us that it feels utterly real and thoroughly compelling. Almost as if to tease the reader ideas are flung at you from left right and center, most of which are not pursued in the story itself, but left to seed the readers own imagination and which serve to enrich the essentially very simple story at the heart of Stardust itself.

A beautifully written story that you shouldn't pass up if you ever get the chance to read. It is very well written, with such descriptiveness that you will think that you are there with the characters as the events unfold. A truely magical tale, and full of whimsy.
The writing style for this one is so different from Neverwhere, it's almost hard to believe that they were both written by the same author! I did enjoy this, but it took me a while to really sink my teeth into it. Not sure why, probably because I wasn't expecting a classic kind of fantasy tale due to my prior experience with Neverwhere, which is still very fresh on my mind as I had just read it recently. Still, I really enjoyed reading Stardust and I thought Neil Gaiman did a magnificent job of building the plot, especially with the various connection - things that didn't strike me as being significant when I read about them initially and then Neil Gaiman creates the linkage later, I thought it was very clever!
An imaginative novel with a story-arch that plays out like an opera in its pleasant closure and serendipity. Set in a world of fairies and giants, kings and assasins, a young man sets out to discover the star he saw fall one night, never realising where it may lead him, or who else might be after the very same goal.
