A Jeeves and Wooster novel When Bertie Wooster goes to Totleigh Towers to pour oil on the troubled waters of a lovers' breach between Madeline Bassett and Gussie Fink-Nottle, he isn't expecting to see Aunt Dahlia there - nor to be instructed by her to steal some silver. But purloining the antique cow creamer from under the baleful nose of Sir Watkyn Bassett is the least of Bertie's tasks. He has to restore true love to both Madeline and Gussie and to the Revd 'Stinker' Pinker and Stiffy Byng - and confound the insane ambitions of would-be Dictator Roderick Spode and his Black Shorts. It's a situation that only Jeeves can unravel. Writing at the very height of his powers, in The Code of the Woosters, P.G. Wodehouse delivers what might be the most delightfully funny book ever committed to paper.

About the Author

The author of almost a hundred books and the creator of Jeeves, Blandings Castle, Psmith, Ukridge, Uncle Fred and Mr Mulliner, P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and educated at Dulwich College. After two years with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank he became a full-time writer, contributing to a variety of periodicals. As well as his novels and short stories, he wrote lyrics for musical comedies, and at one stage had five shows running simultaneously on Broadway. At the age of 93, in the New Year's Honours List of 1975, he received a long-overdue Knighthood, only to die on St Valentine's Day some 45 days later.

Reviews

"Jeeves, Bertie, Totleigh Towers, Sir Watkyn Bassett, Roderick Spode, Gussie Fink-Nottle, and, of course, the cow-creamer. If you've read it, you'll want to read it again. If you haven't, it's a must. The ultimate holiday indulgence: gloriously funny, blissfully frivolous, overflowing with the joys of summer" -- Dominic Sandbrook Daily Telegraph "Wodehouse was the first to demonstrate that one could float like a butterfly yet sting - as with the poor perisher Spode - like a bee" -- Christopher Hitchens "It's dangerous to use the word genius to describe a writer, but I'll risk it with him" -- John Humphrys "For as long as I'm immersed in a P.G. Wodehouse book, it's possible to keep the real world at bay and live in a far, far nicer, funnier one where happy endings are the order of the day" -- Marian Keyes "Wodehouse always lifts your spirits, no matter how high they happen to be already" -- Lynne Truss

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 18/07/2011

This was our "book club' book, it was a very quick read.
The book was of typical old british comedy, i found it frustratingly funny in parts, I think it would be more of a book for men to read, as i felt like strangling the main character Bernie wooster a few times!!, due to his constant lack of quick thinking!,

Overall a quite enjoyable read, PG Wodehouse is the classic writer they all say he is, though won't be reading anymore of his books

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 22/11/2009

The Jeeves novels tend to follow a familiar pattern, but this one is a superior example. Bertie is told by one of his less terrifying aunts to steal a piece of silverware from under the very nose of his nemesis, local magistrate Sir Watkyn Bassett, while simultaneously trying to iron out his friend's relationship troubles - mayhem ensues and it falls to Jeeves to save the day. The Code Of The Woosters is notable for introducing, in a secondary plotline, the character of Roderick Spode. Spode is a merciless spoof of the British Fascist leader Oswald Mosely, and besides adding an uncommon touch of political commentary to Wodehouse's work he livens the story up no end.
