Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards's bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now much as artists progress from drawing to painting Edwards moves from black-and-white into colour. Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive colour workshops Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see colour how to use it and - for those involved in art painting or design - how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 colour images and exercises that move from simple to challenging this volume explains how to: *see what is really there rather than what you know in your mind about coloured objects *perceive how light affects colour and how colours affect one another *manipulate hue value and intensity of colour and transform colours into their opposites *balance colour in still-life landscape figure and portrait painting *understand the psychology of colour *harmonize colour in your surroundings While we recognize and treasure the beautiful use of colour reproducing what we see can be a challenge. Accessibly un-weaving colour's complexity this must-have primer is destined to be an instant classic.

Excellent guide and hands on practical course for absolute beginners for colour mixing and identification. All of the skill building chapters in the book are well supported by painting exercises to develop the skills described. After a brief introduction to colour theory and its history it moves on to the basic colour concepts: the colour wheel and relationships between the colours, value and intensity. The practical part of the book starts with a quick guide to buying and using paints and brushes before moving on to making a series of useful tools including your own colour wheel and value checker while learning to mix colours, change value and intensity and identify hue, value and intensity. The book moves on to creating harmony in colour, then a chapter on the affect of light and shade on colour and techniques to help you to see accurately what these colours are. The next chapter is seeing the beauty of colour in nature. The book concludes with a chapter on the meaning and symbolism of colours and a guide for you to analyse of all your work from the book which Dr Edwards says shows your colour preferences and personal colour expression. My art teacher recommended I work through this book, it is a simple introduction to colour mixing and gives a thorough grounding in colour concepts. After working through this book and grasping the basics I recommend reading Confident Color by Nita Leland to expand your colour horizons, it is a great next step. Happy painting :-)
There is no better book on COLOUR than this book. For the aspiring artist this fills the gap between drawing and painting, it helps the transistion and eases the frustration of identifying a colour and translating that into a pigment which can be applied to the canvas (or paper). An excelent book highly recommended, both theory and very practical.
Color is an interesting book especially to understand values and the importance of values. The role of language in color and painting effects how light and shade can change colors, the effect colors have on each other. The color wheel, primary colors, analogous colors etc, all this seems like a different language but it is important to know how to use color and paint. I give this book ten out of ten as it is a very useful book for reference.
