Celie is a poor black woman whose letters tell the story of 20 years of her life, beginning at age 14 when she is being abused and raped by her father and attempting to protect her sister from the same fate, and continuing over the course of her marriage to "Mister," a brutal man who terrorizes her. Celie eventually learns that her abusive husband has been keeping her sister's letters from her and the rage she feels, combined with an example of love and independence provided by her close friend Shug, pushes her finally toward an awakening of her creative and loving self.

What a great read, I started reading it on the night that I received it before bed time and didn't put it down until the next morning when I had to go to work! It is an incredible story about the life journey of a black African American woman in the 1930's/40's, her bond with the women she encounters throughout her life and what she learns from each of them. This book really reflects in each of us how we become who we are today by the people that have influenced us - for better or worse.
This book is so sad, from the very first page to the very last. It makes you wonder where Celie, the main character, had the strength to carry on and just when things get better for her, they just get worse and worse. It shows women they have strength inside where they never thought they had. Read this if you liked A Thousand Splendid Suns.
