In response to a significant drop in family income several years ago, Sophie Gray was forced to reconsider her grocery budget. She needed to feed two fussy children and satisfy two foodie adults who liked to entertain friends. She became aware of the increasing dependence of domestic cooks on pre-prepared ready-made products and realised that basic cooking skills were being forgotten. Sophie became the destitute gourmet. Destitute Gourmet echoes current cooking trends and also aims to encourage home cooks to innovate and improvise. What do you really need in your pantry? What can you easily do without? How can you create gourmet meals to impress your family and friends and not have to live on bread and water for the next week? This book is for everyone who wants to spend less on groceries and still enjoy tasty, fashionable and healthy food.

With the price of cheese, meat etc going through the roof... this is THE book! Great, quick recipes and even tips for how to have an inexpensive dinner party. Suits us down to the ground with two hungry pre-schoolers and only one income.
This book is excellent, lots of great and cheap recipes, and useful shopping tips as well. Simple, no nonsense and commonsense cooking. The best thing of all is that you won't be searching hours and hours in the supermarket for the ingredients as you will find that you have most of them already in your pantry. Recommended to all who want to save money and eat delicious food
Highly recommended. Excellent cookbook. Easy to follow and heaps of handy hints. recipes are easily adaptable if you wish to add extra veges etc and give many ideas on adding healthy ingrediants such as lentils and beans to your familys diet. Love the homemade jelly recipe.
Love this book. Love the 'making meat go further' section and just some overall fantastic tips on cutting down your weekly spend on food as well as fabulous recipes. Highly recommended.
Sophie Gray is a hero in our household! I always thought that making cheap meals meant that I had to make meals that I thought tasted bland. Sophie Gray has totally changed my mind. All 4 of her books offer our family a range of great recipes that are nutritious but also so incredibly tasty. I have all 4 books and use them all the time.
Excellent! Definately worth getting. All you need is a little time for the recipes. Prices have changed somewhat since publishing so don't think you should be able to stick to the budget Sophie has suggested.
Awesome book for any family. Great yummy and easy food for people watching their wallets.. LOVE the chocolate cake recipe and best thing is it all goes in the food processor and wizz, pour and cook.. so easy to make with the kids. :)
This is a fantastic recipe book. Very simple and very easy and very quick recipes. All family's need to have this book. The ingredients needed are 'normal' ingredients, no special trip to the supermarket.
A fantastic cookbook. Simple, easy to prepare meals that everyone in the family will enjoy. The recipes are great for family meals or for entertaining.
