"Our journey across the Tasman was frightening at times. Sharks tearing at our hull, 30-foot waves crashing over our kayak, and the possibility that the stern of the boat might be ripped away; these were all very real fears. Who were we to take on the Tasman Sea? But the little kid inside me screamed, 'Go on, mate, give it a go.' " James Castrission, from Crossing the Ditch. No one had ever successfully navigated the Tasman by kayak from Australia to New Zealand. Andrew McAuley had come close just months earlier - tragically, though, not near enough to save his life. But two young Australians, James Castrission and Justin Jones, reached the sand at New Plymouth - and a place in history - on 13 January 2008, 62 days after they'd set off from Forster on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. They were sunburnt, bearded, underweight, physically and mentally wasted ...and, most of all, happy to be alive.

This is not just a frank and honest account of an amazing adventure; it is a manual on how to go about planning such a journey. James may not be aspiring to be a writer for the rest of his career but his ability to recreate vivid scenes of just what they went through is superb. I enjoyed reading this book immensely and am looking forward to reading an account of their next adventure; especially if it is in Antarctica

Crossing the Ditch is a riveting adventure story, easy to read and hard to put down. James Castrission is extremely articulate and interesting as he relates the lead up to crossing the Tasman in a purpose built kayak with his friend, Justin Jones, and their backgrounds.
He not only addresses practical logistics of the journey, the highs and the lows and delays in preparation, but also the associated emotional ones which makes good reading and almost makes you feel you were out there with these two gutsy guys. It is the human element that got me, and also the honesty and humour entertwined in every anticipatory, heart stopping page!
The read is thoroughly inspiring, and I cannot help but admire the tenacity and focus shown by these intrepid adventurers.
The best book I have read in a good long while. The word Fantastic! comes to mind.
