Based on historical people and real events, Miller's play uses the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence unleashed by the rumors of witchcraft as a powerful parable about McCarthyism.

Gr 10 Up‘This collection of 13 critical essays, averaging 12 pages in length and dating from the 1960s to the 1990s, is meant to represent the "best current criticism on the most widely read [literature] of the Western world." Addressing both positive and negative aspects of The Crucible, the articles deal with such topics as the language, character analysis, feminist perspectives, and the play as a courtroom drama. A chronology of Miller's life, notes on the contributors, and a comprehensive index round out the volume. Because the articles are not duplicated in the "Contemporary Literary Criticism" series (Gale), Bloom's book will be useful as a circulating companion to that reference resource.‘Michele Snyder, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

there is much more to this book than just ignorance and god fearing. this play is about one man's morals, and how words and simple false declarations can cripple lives.
This is a fascinating commentary, parodying the American 'red terror' and McCarthyism of the 1950's. It is set during the witch hunts and trials of colonial America. Many of the characters are detestable, and the viewer is made to realise how obsessions can turn deadly. A gripping story to read, although it is best performed.
unless you need this book for school then it isnt worth 20 dollars.
If you sit down to read this you will probably be finished in a few hours because thats how quick it is and easy it is to read. There isnt much substance to it and there is hardly any character development worth mentioning.
Its basically a really round about way of talking about how witchcraft was dealt with in those days and how ignorant and god-fearing everyone was.
Theres a movie of it out which is basically just as bad as the play is so i reccomend you watch that instead of wasting so much money on this.
