Welcome to the small town of Bon Temps in Louisiana, where a mid twenty, blonde, blue-eyed waitress named Sookie Stackhouse calls home. But she's no ordinary waitress, she has a disability. She's a telepath. This makes life a little difficult for Sookie, particularly the dating part. Imagine ‘hearing’ all your dates thoughts, not always a desirable thing, especially if there scrutinizing you.
Then one day a stranger arrives in town. He is tall, dark and handsome. And the best part is that, unlike everyone else, Sookie cannot hear his thoughts. But he is not perfect; he is pale, fanged and dead. Enter Bill Compton, vampire.
What follows is a fun and entertaining story, mixing romance, mystery and vampires, as Sookie and Bill begin a relationship, attempt to solve a number of murders that have coincidently occurred with the arrival of Bill into town, not to mention land her brother in jail, and also begins for her a new, and somewhat unwanted, career with the vampires of Louisiana.
It’s an enjoyable and effortless read, a book you can easily lose yourself in.

If it wasn't for the series TRUE BLOOD I wouldn't have read it. This book if you have watched the series first is a real let down as the characters are very light on and Bill is a dirty buggar. As I bought the box set so I read the second rather than waste my $$. To my surprise it was better. Maybe because I haven't watched series 2 and its been off air?? I agree with people who say it is poorly written because it is. But for a bit of mindless fun and entertainment its okay to escape into. It's not Twilight by any means but there is plently worse out there. I didn't see it as time wasted but I didn't gain anything from it either.

If someone likes Twilight, probably this is not the 'right' book, I think. I was the one who said 'No way!' when I watched the first episode of Season 1 TV series 'True Blood'. Then I saw the original book 'Dead Until Dark' at local bookstore. Shop girl commented me ' It's pretty good (book). I read that, too'.
It takes me for a while to finish the book because bed time is the only time I read the book. (30min - 1hour max per night... have a math) Overall, the story was great. I really enjoyed it. Every character is quite realistic. It's not fairy tale story. I was so excited to read the book every night. Luckily, the book has some sequel so I am going to enjoy my bed time for a while from now on.

This book is pretty good it had me intrigued enough to buy the box set which I then read in a week the books have good story lines(although a little predictable), there are a few mistakes but nothing serious and the reading is very easy. I really enjoyed them and I am looking forward to getting the next two books that I have ordered.

This book is fantastic, I can't say enough good things. yes it's a vampire romance but isn't as sappy as Twilight and is definitely no where near as silly- yes Twilight is a bit silly. Unlike the protagonist in the afforementioned Twilight Sookie Stackhouse is a strong, visibly flawed, smart mouthed, innocent and fragile character who could exist in the real world even though she can read minds. She wants a life outside of her boyfriend, she doesn't want to be his lovesick puppy.
The story itself is incredibly well written and is very enthralling. It is the type of book that is very light and funny while having moments of sheer brutality and terror filled suspense. My favourite thing about this book- well one of them because there are so many- is that while it's suspenseful and makes you hungry for more, or should i say thristy at the risk of sounding corny?
We'll go with hungry..... hungry for more it doesn't force you to overthink everything and lets your imagination wander in a fenced of area. It's not a book that has ludicrous twists thrown in to make the reader dizzy with "Huh's and "You've got to be kidding's." no it lets yousee if you can solve the mystery before the characters do- which makes it all the more interesting.
Great Read my only critiscism is that it is not long enough. For fans of True Blood- the fantastic TV show which is based on the books- and Twilight. Although the crazy teenagers whose heart stops when ever the name Edward is mentioned will hate it because it's not lovey. Can't wait to read the second one.

I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I finished in record time.
It is easy to read and has enough characters to keep iyou intrigued.
I can't wait to read the next one and am so glad that there are so many, I can't imagine becoming bored with the story or characters. Sookie is strong and doesn't really ever do what I think she will. Get it your sure not to regret!

With the excellent and intriguing TV series True Blood currently airing, this is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris that the series is based on. Harris has a wonderful light touch with her writing and she manages to draw highly detailed pictures of her characters in a way that is far from forced. There are many layers to this book for the reader to explore.
Set in the 'deep south', where rednecks are aplenty and where racism is a not too distant memory, Harris has brought vampires into the real world where they are grappling with acceptance and legitimacy from the human population.
Main character Sookie is wonderful - she is strong, sassy and displays some interesting abilities of her own, which makes her more than a match for trouble-making vampires. She is instantly drawn to Bill, a vampire trying to go 'mainstream' in a town that is not entirely welcoming to his kind.
There a plot twists and a cracking story which will ensure you want to move straight on to book two after you finish this one - it's impossible not to want to find out what happens next.

I don't understand why so many people like these books, its badly written Mills and Boon with vamps (no insult intended to Mills and Boon). I read this book (well, two thirds of it, I skimmed the last third I was so bored) because the reviews were so positive and was bitterly disappointed.
