Reviews
Mind-reading sleuth Sookie Stackhouse once again finds herself embroiled in supernatural mayhem as she is ordered by the vampire queen of Louisiana to remove the contents of the apartment once belonging to Sookie's cousin Hadley. This young woman died twice-once when changing from human to vampire and then, sadly, when murdered by another undead jealous of the queen's affection for her. Hadley's landlady, Amanda, is a certified witch who had put a protective spell on the apartment, which unfortunately is not quite effective-as Sookie and Amanda find out to their peril. But that's not all. Someone or something is stalking Sookie. With more twists and turns for Sookie, including complications in her unconventional love life, this sixth book in Harris's "Southern Vampire" series offers a grand blend of mystery-cum-fantasy with dollops of romance and humor. In bestseller Harris's perky sixth Southern Vampire novel to star Sookie Stackhouse (after 2005's Dead as a Doornail), the telepathic waitress of Bon Temps, La., is off to (pre-hurricane) New Orleans to close out her dead cousin Hadley's apartment. Hadley's death six weeks earlier had been unexpected, since, as a vampire, she was already dead. Still, she'd led a lively existence as the main squeeze of the Queen of Louisiana, an omnisexual vampire, whose political marriage to the King of Arkansas occurred the night before Hadley's demise. Sookie and Amelia Broadway, Hadley's landlady and a pretty cool witch, immediately discover a mess of trouble left behind in Hadley's closet, and Sookie's soon neck-deep in even more. Though most of the intrigue doesn't come till halfway through, Harris keeps the action going nonstop in this bubbly brew of supernatural spice and whimsical whodunit that's more fun than a barrel of beignets. Alan Ball, the creator of HBO's Six Feet Under, plans to shoot a TV pilot based on the series later this year. 12-city author tour. (May) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Sookie is once again called away from her little home town of Bon Temps on account of a vampire. Only this time it is to the city of New Orleans, and the vampire is her cousin, Hadley. Actually I should say 'was', for as we found out in the short story One Word Answer, Hadley had been killed, and Sookie is off to New Orleans to clean out Hadley's apartment and close out her estate.
But before Sookie can leave Bon Temps there is plenty to keep her occupied. Her ability is called upon to help a co-worker, and there are new people in Sookie's life. One is a new co-worker that Sookie is suspicious off, one is a new worker at Fangtasia, a vampire, who Sookie takes a liking too, and one is a man that Sookie takes a real liking too.
Once Sookie arives in New Orleans, things don't go as smoothly as Sookie hopes. There are surprises awaiting Sookie in Hadley's apartment. There are friends, and enemies, new and old. Kings and Queens, killers and kidnappers. There are obligations, revelations, allegations, confrontations, confessions, broken hearts, broken bodies and fancy dresses.
Sookie is shown New Orleans in all its forms, from the bright lights of the city, to the grand old Garden District, to the dark and damp swamps and bayous, whether she wanted to see it or not.
Sookie is learning more and more about the supernatural community everyday, and so too are we. Every moment brings new excitement and new challenges, this book will keep you on your toes and keep you guessing. I recommend reading the short story One Word Answer by Charlaine Harris, found in the book Bite, before reading this book as it provides a lot of background for this story, although I should say it is not entirely necessary.

This opens with Sookies cousin Hadley already dead & Sookie already having attended the trial for the murderer. At first felt had missed a major chunk of the story as this part of the back story was rushed thru. But story evens out then moves at a steady pace for which these novels are known for. While cleaning out her cousins apartment she befriends the witch landlord whose magic proves very helpful to discover why there was a newly turned vampire hidden in the closet. But of cause just because Sookies in another town does not mean trouble has not followed her & her life is in danger. But thankfully Quinn is there to help even Eric. But when Sookie seems to have escaped one disaster another follows & is not just to her life but also her heart.

The best thing about Charlaine Harris would have to be her quickly paced stories. I've read the Sookie novels right from Dead Until Dark and Definitely Dead was as thoroughly enjoyable as the previous five books.
Harris can be relied upon to quickly start her books, which is something I always appreciate. Once the background is set with a few references to earlier stories, Sookie is off to New Orleans to clean out her doubly-dead cousin's apartment. Of course it sounds simpler than it is and Sookie soon finds herself in more than enough trouble, both from the Weres who are out to get her and the intrigue of the vampire court.
There are a few twists thrown in to help move the entire series forward, however Definitely Dead is an enjoyable story on it's own too. Would recommend to any Sookie Stackhouse fan, or a new reader alike.

My first meeting with the wonderful Sookie Stackhouse character and I can't wait to read more.
Charlaine Harris paints a fantastical, but well thought out world in which vampires are 'out of the coffin' and co-habiting the twenty first century alongside the living. Sookie makes a fun and entertaining heroine. In this tale she solves the mystery of her cousin Hadley's death (since Hadley was a vampire this was her second death), and falls for Quinn, a sexy shape-shifter. A great escapist romp.
