I just can't read enough of Ms Cole's Immortals After Dark series, can't get them fast enough and when I do get the latest in the series ... don't come around, don't call me, don't expect me to leave my room for the next 4 or more hours because I will be completely and utterly immersed in my own little IAD universe baby!
This has to be one of my favourite installments in the IAD series, here we are treated to Carrow Graie's story, a young, free & single witch who lives for the next party and who hails from a coven that can best be described as the modern-day female version of 'Animal House'!
Carrow's story begins with her having been abducted by a black ops type unit who much to her growing ire & astonishment have managed to imprison an ever increasing number of Immortal beings - both good & evil - who have been incapacitated by power-dampening torques in a secret, heavily guarded compound. Carrow discovers however that she isn't the only kidnapped witch in this prison compound, and has to take on the 'mom' role after her 7 year old cousin Ruby, witnesses her mother being murdered soon after arriving at the compound.
Though Carrow is not the most powerful witch in the Lorean neighbourhood, we soon discover why she was specifically marked for abduction. With Ruby's safety and freedom in mind, Carrow is forced by her jailers to travel to a harsh, medieval-like demonic dimension in order to trick a very rare species of immortal a demon turned vampire, to follow her back to her human plane and the much reviled prison compound ... enter Malkom Slaine - her destined mate!
Meet our diamond in the rough hero Malkom Slaine. Our hero was born the bastard son of a whore, he was sold into slavery by his mother as a young boy, he worked his way from the gutter to become a powerful and ruthless commander in the demon rebel army, and was befriended by the usurped demon prince to become his most loyal confidant. Malkom's demonic society was for many years ruled by Horde vampires, and during a pivotal moment of this occupation Malkom and the rebel prince were betrayed by jealous comrades and cruelly turned into vampire-demons ('vemons') by a sadistic vampire leader.
Malkom understandably has issues with people betraying him, having grown up being betrayed at every turn ... you can understand why he lives by the motto "... those who betray me do it only once".
And therein lies the rub for our plucky witch-heroine Carrow ... will the lowly born though noble minded Malkom ever forgive her, and trust Carrow enough to allow them to live out their own 'Happy Ever After'?? All I can say is read and find out for yourselves people ... trust me you won't be disappointed!
I loved this book for a multitude of reasons, foremost Ms Cole gives us an emotion packed story that leaves you wanting more ... but in a good way! Then we have her well fleshed-out characters and compelling relationships - totally addictive! And you can't beat the roller coaster pace and tension that was cleverly maintained from beginning to end. But the winning ingredient for me that sold me on this book, and makes it one of my 'keepers' were the laugh out loud moments! I swear, when I got to the part in this book when the irrepressible Carrow invents the term 'Phicken' to describe the pheasant/chicken game-bird Malkom prepares for her in his demon man-cave, I nearly fell out of my 'phicken' bed laughing my head off!
Oh and did I forget to mention the sensual and incredibly hot love scenes that Ms Cole never fails to deliver in each of her books ... these alone are reasons to award her books with the much lauded 'keeper' status! Her ability to build the tension in her love scenes is masterful ... in fact all of Ms Cole's love scenes should really come with a health warning, those with a heart condition should not even attempt to read these passages unless appropriately medicated!
Do yourself a favour, buy this book, carve out some 'me time' in your personal calendar, then sit back and enjoy - you won't regret it!!
Continuing from where Pleasures of a Dark Prince left off,Demon from the Dark is Carrow, the slutty witch's story.
After getting captured on her way from jail,Carrow is blackmailed into working for a human organization bent on destroying creatures from the Lore. Her mission is to lure a Vemon(Vampire/Demon) from his own demonic plane to the compound where the other Lore creatures are kept.
Malkolm Slaine ,the son of a whore climbed all the way to the top of the food chain only to find his world crumbling when he and his prince are captured by vampires. When one of them has to die,Malkolms survival instincts take over causing him to kill his prince.
Four hundred years later,Malkom still blames his fate on the demon who betrayed him and his prince and has been trying to lure his prey out into the open since...
Once she has met her intended prey,Carrow has no compunctions over handing over the hairy barbarian bent on seducing her and sucking her blood, but as she grows to like him and his barbaric ways Carrow begins to regret having to betray him...
The only downer in this story was the fact that Malkolm took so long to get over getting betrayed even though he knew her reasons for doing it.
