Although a belief in magic predated a belief in God in ancient Egypt, study of the religious texts has revealed that for the Egyptians, religion and magic were inseparable. Throughout their development into one of the most highly intellectual peoples, the Egyptians had a widespread belief in spells, magical names, amuletes and enchantments that gave them the reputation of being at once the most religious and the most superstitious of races.
