About the Author

Dr. Michael C. Flickinger is the Associate Director forAcademic Programs of the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training andEducation Center (BTEC) and a Professor of Microbiology andChemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina StateUniversity, Raleigh. From 1985 to 1992 Dr. Flickinger was Director of the University ofMinnesota's Institute for Advanced Studies in Biological ProcessTechnology (BPTI), which was later renamed the BiotechnologyInstitute (BTI), and a Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Biologyand Biophysics at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. Prior tocoming to Minnesota Dr. Flickinger was Director of the FermentationProgram at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick,Maryland. Dr. Flickinger received his academic training at the University ofWisconsin, Madison. He graduated with honors earning a B.S. degreein microbial biochemistry in 1973. He then moved to the School ofPharmacy for his graduate work and received M.S. (1975) and Ph.D.degrees (1977) in pharmaceutical biochemistry. He did hispostdoctoral work at the Laboratory for Renewable ResourcesEngineering (LORRE) in the School of Chemical Engineering, PurdueUniversity, West Lafayette, Indiana. He is Co-Editor of the Encyclopedia of Bioprocess Technology:Fermentation, Biocatalysis and Bioseparation (Wiley, 1999).
