Most American women would agree that those Frenchies have something going on. La Femme Nikita, Catherine Deneuve, even Audrey Tatou of Amelie fame-they all possess a certain je ne sais quoi. In this cutesy pick-me-up of a book, Ollivier-an American married to a Frenchman-insists that you, too, can be glamorous, mythic and mysterious; "a star in the pantheon of feminine beauty and strength." How can American gals tap into their inner Frenchness? Ollivier lays down the law, interspersing her must-dos with sidebars detailing, for example, legendary French ladies from Josephine Bonaparte to Coco Chanel. Among Ollivier's tips: for loungewear, think silk mou-mous or padded zebra-skin mules, not baggy sweat pants; toss the Equal and use regular sugar in your coffee; and go ahead and gossip, but be discreet. Stereotypical? Peut-etre. But Ollivier's overall advice-seek beauty everywhere; accept character flaws; don't rush to define a romantic relationship-goes far beyond the realm of France and its women, and is evident in smart women the world over. Ah yes, another book on how to completely rejuvinate your inner, better, more stylish, thinner, attractive self-- in French (ooh la la)! Well... not quite.
The premise of this book is not how to reinvent yourself, but how to discover yourself. The means to self-discovery the author expresses are through 1) quality, not quantity, 2) authenticity 3) self-esteem 4) appreciation of history. These main themes are delivered through charming vignettes of French life, be it their cinema, literature, famous women, or famous cuisine.
I am an avid reader of all things which give insight into the lifestyles of the french who have a fascinating culture and some intresting quirks and ways. I am too often dissappointed with books in this genre however this was an absolutely fabulous read. Written with intelligence and in an easy to read format Ollivier has obviously done her research well and is truly passionate about her subject matter. There are lots of references to guide you towards other books and films on the topic. If your a francophile or would just like some interesting advice on a few different ways of being a modern woman then buy this book.
Maybe i found this book levelling on average as i am not a huge frensch fan, i see them as having a persona of sexy and style and real femininity but they are just like everyone else. I more enjoyed this book for its insights into frensch culture and arts and history than as a guide to how french women are unbaringly irresistable. It was an interesting read in that respect of the wide and varied topics and facts that i didnt know, but thats where it ends for me. I am not persuaded to think that french women are any more sexy than aussies or americans or latin women.
