I don't feel Eric lived up to the normal excellent work of the diskworld series. It gave a bit of a fill in on what Rincewind was doing when he disappeared but it didn't draw me in.
The lot didn't seem to have much depth and Eric I just found annoying. I think it is a must still for all the terry pratchett fans, like me , that collect his whole series but I it didn't pull me in like the others.

Rincewind is an endearing character - he always is. In this short story, he gets put through his paces yet again as he is called up as a demon (damn dungeon dimensions!), and must face the usual number of hilarious situations. As with all of Pratchett's books, you can expect a laugh out loud book packed with fun.

Eric is a very good book. Rincewind, cowardly wizard, unsure where he is, turns up in an attic after the book Sourcery. However, the attic feels neither safe nor secure, nor boring (which is what Ricewind really wants), but instead features an old man addressing him as the Spawn of Satan and demanding a ot of money, the whole world and a beautiful woman who won't run away...

This was the first Discworld novel I ever read. While the majority of Discworld books are accessible with little to no prior knowledge of the series, "Eric" is a very challenging read for anyone new to this otherwise fantastic series. Rather than a fully-fledged Discworld novel, this slim addition to the series was apparently written as a way of getting the inept "wizzard" Rincewind back from the Dungeon Dimensions for further adventures in future novels. Therefore, it doesn't work as well as it should and comes across as confusing, contrived and episodic. Still, it has its funny moments and serves well as a parody. Still, strictly for the fans.

This was originally printed (and intended) as a "picture" book a version which is sadly no longer in print. This is why the novel seems so thin and the story is short and disjointed -it was never really intended to be read in this form. If you actually had the illustrations to properly tell the other half of this story you would get much more enjoyment out of this book.

I actually quite liked this novel, though I can see where the other reviewer is coming from, the main character is a bit unlikeable, which is why I find it quite nice when things go wrong for him :) I also enjoyed the fact that this novel added and focused on a new character, and had a lot from different settings that a lot of his other novels. Some change can be good, and I wish that pratchett would do some more radically different stuff.

Sadly this is the only Pratchett Novel I have ever been disapointed with. Not that its bad by any stretch of the imagination but the main character is incredibly hard to sympathise with, being a complete git.

Rincewind (a recurring, inept, wizardly character) is usually good for laughs but he spends most of his time despairing about Eric, the faustian main character.

The humour seems forced and even trite at times but the odd joke does hit home and the writing moves along at a good pace so its not a boring book, its just not great.
