Drawing upon 40 years experience as an ecological farmer, Salatin explains with humor and passion why Americans do not have the freedom to choose the food they purchase and eat. He explains why local food is expensive and why the current system favors industrial, corporate food systems.

This is a highly entertaining and insightful book. Unlike other books examining the food system, Salatin does not only focus on the effects of agribusiness upon the environment and animal, but rather his struggles as a small scale local food producer, trying to make a living in a country where regulation and government policy favours big business. The narrative is humourous, yet eye-opening as Salatin describes how his ecologically sustainable, small scale farming practices are, in effect, illegal in the US.
A highly recommended read, however, approach with an open mind as some of his opinions are sure to shock everyone, from the supporters of strong government, business-as-usual agribusiness, to the environmental anti-corporate, anti-globalisation vigilantes and those in between.
