Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history.
Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.

"[A] dazzling literary high-wire act . . . brilliant . . . The payoff is extraordinary: a fearless, acrobatic, ultimately haunting effort to combine inspired mischief with a grasp of the unthinkable."

What a stunning, enthralling novel. Try not to read too much about the storyline, but instead, let the book unfold before you. This book is not simply text, but includes photos that are a part of the story. This book is un put down able! Read it! Buy it for your friends. what a great christmas gift!

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 17/03/2009

Honestly, this is the best book i've ever read. Absolutely a must read. I agree with what is said above...try not to find out too much about the plot or the story line...i opened it and began reading with absolutely no idea and it was a revelation. He's a really masterful writer and makes me feel so inadequate as a person because he's so full of talent and insight. Amazing.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 17/03/2009

The above posts are right. This is easily the best book I've ever read. Safran Foer's first book "Everything is Illuminated" was hilarious and touching, but this one trumps that in a very different way. I agree with just reading the book and letting it unfold before you. He writes with such succinct and unique characters - it is amazing and surprising that a child didn't write parts of the book. Each character has their own very human and real voice within the story. Absolutely a must read.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 21/12/2006

This book is wonderful. The author gets into the mind of a young kid so effortlessly, it makes me wonder if a kid actually wrote parts of it! It follows the story of a young man who's father died in the September 11 tragedy, and who left him a great mission to complete. This book is for anyone who likes a story that is a bit 'off'. A must read.
