Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are. The Father of Existentialism, Kierkegaard transformed philosophy with his conviction that we must all create our own nature; in this great work of religious anxiety, he argues that a true understanding of God can only be attained by making a personal leap of faith'.
About the Author
Soren Kierkegaard's childhood was clouded by the religious fervour of his father. Studying both theology and the liberal arts, he began to criticize the Christianity upheld by his father and look for a new set of values. He wrote no fewer than twelve major philosophical essays and his work inspires both modern Protestant theology and existentialism. In his own time, he died an object of public ridicule and scorn.

Through a commentary on the Old Testament story of Abraham's sacrifice of his son Isaac, Kierkegaard (under a pseudonym John the Silent) recounts a conception and almost-methodolgy on matters of faith and "resignation", tackling the problem of intellectualising the idea of faith in God with a kind of creative belligerence, and instilling the concept of faith with an aura of absolute admiration in the light of its possible-impossibility. This is difficult to crack without some outside help, which comes from extra familiarity with Kierkegaard (other works, his journals, etc.) rather than any kind of genius, but once you understand the mechanics behind some of his terminology, knights of faith and resignation, movement of faith, etc. everything fits quite well, and reading it is much easier and more productive. I listened to some of Hubert Dreyfus' lectures from UC Berkeley (google it) after reading, which was very enjoyable, and did clarify many things. I'd recommend this first to all Christians and those who are interested in Christianity, and equally to those interested in the beginnings of the strand of philosophy we love to talk about talking about, existentialism. On top of this Kierkegaard is an amazing writer, often amusing, so obviously authentic, strewn with intense emotion, and above all creative, taking his complex ideas into witty, story-like illustration.
A profound and defining piece of writing on one of the most fascinating theological issues. This book features the introduction of the Knight of Faith and poses some difficult questions to a reader who often is spoon fed an answer. If you enjoy a lengthy and challenging read, this is for you.
