Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin's monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction. A Feast for Crows It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King's Landing. Robb Stark's demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist--or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out. But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces--some familiar, others only just appearing--are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead. It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strongwill acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests--but only a few are the survivors.

While I agree that this book is a lot slower than the two previous installments in the series (A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords), I personally love it. It stillhas plenty of drama and plotting in it, and feels much closer to the series first book, A Game of Thrones, than the action heavy ACoK and ASoS. The decision to split this and upcoming A Dance with Dragons by character/region instead of by chronology is interesting, and while I probably would have preferred it the other way, I can appreciate the authors hard decision.
Personally, I love the focus on those that aren't the favourites; Jaime and Arya both have very interesting things going on in their storylines, and the inclusion of others like Briennes and the Iron Islands chapters are very different from others we've had in the past.
I think this book is great, and didn't find it a chore to read at all, even if it wasn't quite up to the standard set by ASoS. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
I have been struggling with this book for some months. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. The first three books were page turners. I think we have got bogged down with the politics of the setting and subsequently introduced tooooo many inconsequential characters. There aren't many books that I haven't finished, but this could be one! I think John Snow and Lady Catelyn Stark may keep me going.
This book is the fourth in the series. Though it is not as good as the third book (not much is) I still find it better than most other books out there. It is a slower book with less action than the previous books because of the end of the war has meant that there is no battles and all the conflict has become political. My largest disapointment is that my favourive charaters were not in the book, (the book was split in two so they will be in the next one) and I feel that it lacks from the humor that they bought to the series.
Weak, weak, weak.
Martin's first 3 books were absolute barnburners, with not a flat note in sight. A Feast for Crows is tepid, slow moving, and follows all of your least-loved third-string characters through their dull and meandering quests to walk from one city to another. Without Tyrion, without Jon Snow and without flash, a Feast for Crows is the book that should never have been. It begs for an editor on nearly every page, and whilst there's the odd bit of good writing in here, the whole book felt like a necessary chore: To keep you up with developments in the world, you simply *had* to read it.
You don't.
