Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth - are four "little women", enduring hardships and enjoying adventures in Civil War New England. The charming story of the March sisters, "Little Women" has been adored by generations. Readers have rooted for Laurie in his pursuit of Jo's hand, cried over little Beth's death, and dreamed of traveling through Europe with old Aunt March and Amy. Future writers have found inspiration in Jo's devotion to her writing. In this simple, enthralling tale, both parts of which are included here, Louisa May Alcott has created four of American literature's most beloved women.
About the Author
Louisa May Alcott (1832--88) was brought up in Pennsylvania, USA. She turned to writing in order to supplement the family income and had many short stories published in magazines and newspapers. Then, in 1862, during the height of the American Civil War, Louisa went to Georgetown to work as a nurse, but she contracted typhoid. Out of her experiences she wrote Hospital Sketches (1864) which won wide acclaim, followed by an adult novel, Moods. She was reluctant to write a children's book but then realized that in herself and her three sisters she had the perfect models. The result was Little Women (1868) which became the earliest American children's novel to become a classic

What a delightful book. The lives of the March girls, although seemingly ordinary, keep you glued to the pages. If you love old-fashioned novels with good morals, this is a great read.
An American classic that everyone else can enjoy and relate to on some level. The first of four introduces the reader to the March girls: the happy times and their woes. Especially entertaining is young Amy, although flighty Jo undoubtedly steals the limelight. This novel sets up the romances to be found later and leaves the reader wanting to read the rest to find out what becomes of these lovable 'Little Women'.
'Little Women' is one of those amazing books that can be read by children and adults with equal enjoyment. It is a classic and deserves to be so, but I think it is a pity that that accolade can stop people from reading a book which will leave them feeling as those they have become part of the wonderful March family.
im really confused by little women some times, its history at least. i read it as one big book but apparentally when it was published louisa may alcott published it as two seperate books, one which ended at meg's engagement and one which finsihed it properly. oh well in any case it is a fantastic book worth reading
This is truely my all time favourite book. I remember reading it as a child and being absolutely entranced by the tale of the lovely March sisters as they shared joy, grief, poverty and love. Louisa May Alcott's superb writing really made me want to be a better person, and I learnt many a moral lesson from this fantastic book
I finally read Little Women when I wa 23. When I was in junior high, my mom and grandmother recommended I read it, but it sounded so dorky and old fashioned that I never gave it a try. Even my best friend whom I considered "cool" told me how great it was, but I didn't believe her. I saw the 1998 movie when I was about 22 and that led me to finally read the book. I was surprised that the book was even better than the movie. I think this should be on teen's summer reading lists. Even though it was written a long time ago, it is definitely still relavant.
A story of four sisters full of devotion and protection for one another, a selfless mother who adored and mentored them, a father gone off to civil war. The narrative follows the girls from adoring adolescence to wise adults with all that goes into making life between. It was noted that Alcott used her own personality traits to portray Jo, a willful, headstrong lady who was dominant in the March family and the heroine. Good mentoring and definitely a classic.
What a beautiful story, set for all ages. My three young girls love this story and I have read it many times. Historicaly set yet ageless this story follows a family of girls as they grow up to became women with many different choices. For one the choice is made to stay home and look after the family, another chooses the life of wife and mother. Travel is on the cards of the youngest daughter while Joe becomes a writer. I couldn't put this book down even when though I have known the story already.
What an amazing story. The detail in the narrative, the relationships between the sisters, and the twists and turns, are all captured beatifully in this book. The excitment of an age gone by, the courting and romances, the ambitions of young women in an age where they are so limited with what they were permitted to do.
A great insight into a family unit that struggles through hard times together, and no matter what stick together.
A book that some were lucky enough to avoid having inflicted on them as youths. Alas, that was not me.
Likely a lot more have avoided it these days. :) Perhaps there should be some sort of special torment devised for zealots that inflict this on young boys. Maybe 7 hours of slasher movies, straight, or something!
