I love this book. It took me only a couple of hours to read, but I cried for at least an hour afterwards. Steinbeck knew how to write tragic, futile, distinctly American tales about struggle and loss. The closest thing to a criticism is that it might be a bit too sentimental, emotionally manipulative, for a more cynical reader. Overall, highly recommended.
A very sad novel, full of deep meanings and morals. It is worth getting and studying to understand the depth of Steinbeck's writings. Once that is continually referred to, especially in American culture. Very short, so it is not taxing to read. I would recommend to all if you are prepared to consider it's depth.
A very sad, touching story, about a disabled man and his friend who tries to treat him normally. It is very well written and veru realistic, some funny parts, but most of this was extremely meaningful. Anybody should get this book, nothing to do with the Megadeth song with same title
This was a great novel, no doubt about that. Still - its just so sad. At the end, you simply feel for every charater in the book, including the villains and the helpless heroes. This is a testament to Steinbeck's vivd and realistic characterisation.
If you don't want to be horribly depressed, have nothing to do with this book. If you can stand it though, read it. It's a wonderful book.
A short novel, but very touching and moving. You will fall in love with the two main characters and you will experience every emotion under the sun as you follow the adventures of these two guys. Eveything that you would expect from Steinbeck, and very satisfying read. Can easily be read in one sitting and would recommmend it as a nice way to whittle away an hour of two in front of the fire on a cold winters afternoon...
George and Lennie are drifters looking for work in the USA of the late 1930s. Lennie is a gentle giant; George protects and guides him, and tries to keep him out of trouble, but also needs Lennie's companionship. They dream of one day owning a farm but, as Robert Bruns writes, "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry"...
Tragic, poignant, sad, harsh, beautiful - an absolute classic...
