This Novel, set in the near future, is about Alex and his band of Droogs. The go around at night raping, stealing and enjoying a bit of 'the old Ultra-Violence'.
It is about human nature, free will and asks many questions. A Must read, although be warned, it is not for the faint hearted.
Clockwork Orange is a classic, truly a must read for anyone interested in the development of fiction writing in the last 100 years. The language of this book is, i think, a great part of it's appeal. Modern english mixed with rhyming slang, russian and, at times, Shakespear-ian style speech. This edition does not have a glossary, as Anthony Burgess intended to force readers to use a Russian dictionary for words they did not recognise. The plot explores friendship and growing up, but it is the society where teens commit 'untra-violence' as a form of entertainment which this book is most famous for.
In the not-too-distant future, a charming young sociopath named Alex, leads a nihilistic lifestyle of 'ultraviolence' which comes to a head when he is jailed for murder and volunteers for an experimental brainwashing treatment to reform criminals in exchange for a shorter prison sentence.
It really says something about being human, and about our right to choose. I think.
You see this book can be taken on so many levels, and it talks to different people in different ways. I didn't LIKE it, but I was certainly glad I'd read it.
this is a really great book, really unique, the only thing i can really compare it with would be george orwells "1984". i first picked up this book because of the cool name, but upon reading it found out that it was much more than a name, and a really shocking book about brainwashing. this really gave me chills at some points, like whn alex is first captured!
This book is set in the not-too-distant fictional future, and tells the story of an "ultraviolent" gang leader who is caught and "treated" with aversion therapy to try and cure him of his bad behaviour. It raises questions of what is acceptable in society, and how might unacceptable behaviour be dealt with ethically, and without stripping a person of their soul. It could also be seen as a satire of the modern propensity to pay criminals for injustices committed against them in jail, though I have no knowledge of the influences on Burgess. This book is one of the few times the little Russian I leaned has been of use to me.
The book A Clockwork Orange, is a very and unique writing style. This style is of course Anthony Burgess's own writing style. When he uses the Brainwash tactics on Alex in the book, this sort of reminds me about what the government does to our people today. As you should know Burgess was in the army for six years, and during thoes six years i believe that he was sort of brainwaashed. This is beacuse in most of his writings he talks about his past. So this leads me to think that he was brainwashed.
