This title includes an introduction and notes by Keith Wren, University of Kent at Canterbury. The story of Edmund Dantes, self-styled Count of Monte Cristo, is told with consummate skill. The victim of a miscarriage of justice, Dantes is fired by a desire for retribution and empowered by a stroke of providence. In his campaign of vengeance, he becomes an anonymous agent of fate. The sensational narrative of intrigue, betrayal, escape, and triumphant revenge moves at a cracking pace. Dumas' novel presents a powerful conflict between good and evil embodied in an epic saga of rich diversity that is complicated by the hero's ultimate discomfort with the hubristic implication of his own actions.

alexander dumas is a genius, and this book embodies all of his extra ordinary talents as a writer. when a young man is wrong fully imprisoned as the results of a political scandal, he spends years in the terrible french prison planning his revenge and it is satisfying to read him as he gets his revenge
Alexandre Dumas’ compelling story of love, betrayal and revenge. This book has all the ingredients of a fantastic adventure story. Our hero Dantes, betrayed by his best friend who was in love with Dantes woman. Forced in to a hell on earth called Chateau d'If. Then life as a pirate and finally exacting his terrible revenge.
Fantastic stuff.
I thought this would be good, because a friend raved about the plot of the movie, but really I just found it irritating. I found the plot itself good, but the writing style of the author left me confused and angry. Why would he devote three pages to the epic escape from the island prision, but about a zillion to what the anti-heroine was wearing? And what, exactly, had she done wrong to deserve what she got? (Beg pardon - trying not to add spoilers)
No - way to silly for me. Give it a go if you want to, but you've been warned.
A wrongly accused good man looses his gal and is locked up for years, he goes through hell, when he finally escapes he sets out to bring wreak havoc and ruin the lives of those who wronged him. This, of course, does not come without a price, but he is exacted on revenge, lots of action and swordplay. Sad bits, fun bits, action, and all round good story.
Daring escapes and dashing swordplay. More fun than at least three quarters of a barrel of monkeys. A monomaniacal revenge fantasy on one level, and a swashbuckling story on another. Wrongly imprisoned, a man eventually escapes and sets out to bring wrack and ruin upon those who wronged him. This, of course, does not come without a price, in the end. While I prefer my musketeers, this is pretty good.
