Published in 1957, Atlas Shrugged was Ayn Rand's greatest achievement and last work of fiction. In this novel she dramatizes her unique philosophy through an intellectual mystery story that integrates ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, politics, economics, and sex. Set in a near-future U.S.A. whose economy is collapsing as a result of the mysterious disappearance of leading innovators and industrialists, this novel presents an astounding panorama of human life-from the productive genius who becomes a worthless playboy...to the great steel industrialist who does not know that he is working for his own destruction...to the philosopher who becomes a pirate...to the woman who runs a transcontinental railroad...to the lowest track worker in her train tunnels. Peopled by larger-than-life heroes and villains, charged with towering questions of good and evil, Atlas Shrugged is a philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller.

This book is inspiring, Rand's mastership of the art of novel writing creates a great story. As well as this, she weaves into the narrative a philosophy that is morally just and worthy of recognition(which it already has) by more than the average citizen. I recommend this book and her other fiction, particularly The Fountainhead.
This is an absolutely excellent book. Second only to the Fountainhead in my love, this book is an amazing and engaging read. Rand has incredible characters which you will fall in love with, and equally those who you will loathe. Ayn Rand's philosophy is the embodiment of integrity. Where what you believe in is final, and nothing -NOTHING- is compromised to uphold this. This is an intensely inspirational book.
Here is another outstanding novel from an incredible author! I think I would recommend this to be read after 'The Fountainhead' by Rand, but don't let that stop you! Rand creates a world which really is just an exaggerated version of our own, filled with the most filthy, pathetic general public ever. But she allows us a glimmer of hope, in the form of two or three main characters, whose integrity never leaves them. Absolutely engaging.
This is my favourite novel of all time. Ayn Rand cops a lot of flak (mostly from people that have never read her) for being a "cold-hearted fundamentalist capitalist" (she was an objectivist). Her work however is thorough, fascinating and spellbinding. This capitivating novel tells a detailed story about what she perceives to be the nature of humankind- yet rather than be dogmatic it is tightly woven within a solid story. The size of the book could be daunting but you wont be able to put it down, I found myself really caring about the characters and their happenings. A truly excellent piece of writing.
