In this controversial classic fairy tale, a farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality, setting the stage for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned. Animal Farm is often read as an allegory for the rise of authoritarian practices after the Russian Revolution of 1917. This is true, in part, but, it must not be forgotten that George Orwell's dark fairytale is more so a tale of economic exploitation from the perspective of animals. As such, it is a significant work to be read by any involved in animal liberation, or cares for animals. And, indeed, Orwell's work is often far from being an allegory when taken from the perspective of animals. The fate of horses is too often the fate of the horse in Animal Farm.
this is an excellent satire from george orwell. easier to understand than animal farm, and a bit more child friendly, as many schools study this as part of their english course. this tells of animals tht over run the humans in charge of their farm, as they beleive that they will create a better world for themseleves. loosely based on stalins regime.
Animal Farm is a dark satire, showing us what the author considers are some of the worse implications of communism and its failures, and human politics in general.
He uses a farm animal setting as the means to do this, as the various creatures set up their own class structures, leadership and indulge in repression and violence.
Now THIS is a great book. How this man wrote this before the iron curtain fell is still a mystery to me, but he was very clever, and his book reflects that.
I love how easy it is to read, and how easy it is to get kids to understand whats going on. It's a great lesson in modern history and esp that of Russia.
Read this book if you haven't - you MUST read it. It is awsome.
this is an excellent satire by orwell. he uses animals as a metaphor for humans, and how they try to achieve perfection, but find that they are unable to, as there are those greedy members in society (in this book, the pig snowball represents those people). this is a great read for all those wanting a book that will make you think!
All animals are created equal - but some are more equal than others.
The title sounds like a children's cartoon and this book has been made into a cartoon. Orwell's commentary on Stalin's Russia. Orwell is such a great writer. His work is accessible to anyone. It's probably because he used to be a journalist.
Another classroom classic and one that I still own today. It's relevance lies in the satorical equivient of the Animal Farm to the Russain Revolution. All Animals ar equal but some are more equal than others... It perfectly allegorises the takeover of Lenin by Stalin, in a short, witty manner. A Must Read
I have just recently read this book in school for NCEA assessment and this is a great book which has a lot symbolic information.
the summary of the text is this is about a bunch of animals that are being treated very badly by their owner 'Jones' who is later chased away by the animals.
Majour one of the symbolic characters speaks to the animals about the "Satiric Utopia" which is the ideal world. He explains that the animals should be free and "Equal."
George Orwells greatest fear was that people would forget what happened in the imidiate past of what happened in the Russian revolution. This book is to remind us that in the russian revolution the society based on socialoist principles could be so easily destroyed by greed and self interest.
In the end it is the working classes who suffer the most, not the rich.
The "Satiric Utopia" never existed because of greed, self interest, prejudice and manipulation.
Each character plays a character in the russian revolution, for example, Old Majour plays Karl Marx, who in history had the theory that everyone should share out their wages and everyone should work together and share the profits, this would never work because it's in our human nature to always want more rather than everything being the same, this comes down to others becoming greedy etc.
Overall this book is good and should be read carefully so that all is understood.
I really liked this book and when read it coalition with a bit of background knowledge it made me think about how successful a revolution can be. we can see heaps of links with today from this classic novel in cases where although leaders may mean the best the people under them end up living in misery and destruction. this book is a classic example of what too much power will do in the hands of the unworthy. It takes a while to get past the idea of animals but as long as you know that it is a satirical tale im sure you will love it.
