It all begins with the paranoid delusions of a half-insane hero called Rorschach--but is he really insane or has he, in fact, uncovered a plot to murder super-heroes and possibly millions of innocent civilians? Following two generations of masked super-heroes from the close of World War II to the icy shadow of the Cold War comes this groundbreaking comic story--the story of The Watchmen.

An absolute must-read as far as I'm concerned.
A wonderful arching plot and intriguing characters, make this well worthwhile and beats any embarrassment you may initially feel for reading a "comic book."
Drawn in a very classic, superhero style, which I initially found off-putting, but adds to the genius of the work.
Alan Moore said he'd set about to create something with the density of something like Moby-Dick. I think he succeeded.
amazing story.. easily the best work by Alan Moore..
This comic book changed the way that graphic novels are seen as a story telling medium. It ventures into the mind of a superhero and asks the question of why they do what they do, the mental state one must be in to dress up and be a vigilante.. It expresses the political and social implications of masked heroes and superheroes..
AN INTELLIGENT AND THOUGHT PROVOKING STORYLINE EMBELLISHED BY INSIGHTFUL ARTWORK AND INKING. tHE WRITERS/CREATORS HAVE UTILISED THE DIFFERENT NARRATIUVE PATHS AVAILABLE IN A GRAPHIC NOVEL TO USHER A SENSE OF URGENCY WHILE STEADILY COMPLETING A STRONG STORYLINE. I LIKED THE INTERSECTION OF SRAIGHTT TEXTUAL NARRATIVE TO FLESH OUT THE BACK STORY -AS IN AS IN ALL GOOD GRAPHIC NOVELS IT IS UNNECESARY TO READ THIS TEXT IN ORDER TO FOLLOW THE STORY.
i RECOMMEND THIS NOVEL AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW A GOOD GRAPHIC NOVEL COMBINES STORY, CHARACTER AND A SENSE OF MYSTERY. AT NO POINT DID I FEEL THAT I WAS READING A STANDARD TEXT - THE NEXT PLOT DEVELOPMENT WA ALWAYS REFRESHING.
Coming from Alan Moore, comic book storyteller extraordinaire, it's no surprise that this fantastic graphic novel is such a complex, deep and multi-layered reading experience for the mature reader.
Watchmen is set in an alternate universe Cold War era where superheroes do not actually have super powers (with the exception of one) but are people with above-average talents who refer to themselves as "costumed adventurers". In this timeline, the 'costumed adventurers' have been outlawed and viewed as vigilantes,so most of them have retired and returned to civilian life. However, the murder of an individual who turned out to have been the costumed adventurer known as "The Comedian" led Rorschach (a costumed vigilante who defied the law, refusing to stand down) into an investigation that reveals numerous twists and turns, leading to a powerful climax and end.
In conclusion, great artwork mixed with unparalleled storytelling make this a must-read, if not must-have graphic novel.
A complex work, with many themes. In the present, super powered vigilantes are outlawed, and someone has started to murder them. The insanity of possible nuclear war is always lurking in the background.
Political criticism, criticism of the comics industry and genre stultification, and integrity versus pragmatism.
Conspiracy theory vigilante Rorscach goes back to work to discover what is going on, gathering allies to get to the truth.
The conflict eventually involves others of their own fraternity.
This is an awesome graphic novel. I highly recommend this to those who like something different, but also for those who love superhero stories! This is set in a gritty superhero world, where the disenchanted public are currently doomed. There are many twists and turns in this subtle comic. It took me a long time to read, and so is value for money, and thoroughly enjoyable! Excellent!!
Alan Moore deserves recognition as one of the great storytellers of our time!
For all the hype and acclaim attached to this book I just didn't find it that interesting. The story was written in the mid eighties so the pacing is rather slow and the panel layout rather uninteresting. The art is good but the colouring is drab and not helped by the rather poor quality paper this collection is printed on.
