– Customer review on 24/06/2007 First in an ongoing series, and soon to be Hollywood blockbuster, TDON is a superbly crafted piece of work. Engaging without being cheesy, the dialogue is snappy and to-the-point, never waffly. Set in Northern Alaskan town where the sun dips below the horizon for 30 days, havoc ensues when a group of vampires come for a month-long blood orgy.
Ben Templesmith's artwork makes this novel. Reminiscent of Ralph Steadman's mentally disturbing illustrations of Hunter S Thompson's writing, it is warped and splattery, completely suited to the subject matter. The genius is in that the illustration retains that classic comic feel of high contrast, beautifully blended colours but also offsets it with the Pollock-like incidental paint spatters which add to the emotion. This makes it feel not so much unreal, as hyper-real.
Very readable, and stands up to repeated readings.
