The druid Getafix is running short of rock oil - an essential ingredient in the magic potion, which gives the Gaulish villagers superhuman strength to fight Julius Caesar's Roman legions. But the Phoenician merchant Ekonomikrisis has forgotten the druid's order, and Asterix and Obelix set off to prospect for black gold in the Middle Eastern desert. Their mission is complicated by the Roman secret agent Dubbelosix and his amazing folding chariot, which is equipped with all the latest spy gadgets. Not bad as things go at the latter stages of this series. While not as full of verbal wit and keen classical allusions as the earlier books (written by the late Rene Goscinny) this certainly isn't as bad as they would get with "Asterix and the Actress" and so on. Spys, espionage and James Bond get the Asterix treatment this time, and while there are funny bits (wandering tribes in the desert), it's still just mildly okay compared to some of the earlier classics.
With Rene Goscinny deceased, Albert Uderzo began writing as well as illustrating the series. Not as good as the first 24, they are no less popular.
This isn't too bad... Getafix needs rock oil for his potion and so sends the intrepid duo to Mesopotamia to find it. However, a Roman spy named Dubbelosix (who looks very like a young Sean Connery drawn in James Bond styles) is intent on fouling it up...
This is the 26th of 33 adventures, published in French in 1981 and translated into English in 1982.
