I love the book, the illustrations are amazing, Frank Miller uses simplicity at it's best. The water colours by Lynn Varley are beautiful, it's nice seeing and having a beautiful hand drawn and painted graphic novel.

A very cool rendition of the Spartans, Frank Miller style. Don’t expect historical accuracy, that’s not what this is about, it’s about style and violence, mainly the latter of course but overall they’re about equal. Well drawn and good biting dialogue. The movie of the same title is also good, except for Leonidis’ Scottish accent.

Great high quality graphic novel. There is some amazingly stylised work in it by Frank, although some of it borders on sloppy in my opinion. Lynn Varleys watercolours are absolutely spectacular. The story is gripping and the dialogue is often wittiy and smart. I absolutely recommend it.

Up until the movie came out this was one of Frank Miller's forgotten works, hidden in the shadows cast by The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City. This was a great pity because quite honestly this is some of the best work he has ever done both as a writer and artist. Hopefully with the attention the movie draws, more people will come to appreciate this book.

This is one of the more standout graphic novels by the famous comic artist Frank Miller, also known for the creation of the 'Sin City' series. The illustrations are outstanding, some of his best work, even though his work on it sits in the shadow of Sin City. The story is pretty much accurate to the way it was told by Herodotus, except for the addition of some mythological monsters from the mythology of that time.

Standalone epic novel based on true events with bits and pieces of mythology intertwined, but don't complain, as that is the way that Herodotus the forefather of history did it, unlike Thucydides's after him, so why not get back to original roots with the way history was told in the beginning from as far as Homer. Nudity is just the way it was in those days, Spartans were always nude, as was a lot of things in Greek culture which was influenced by the "beauty" of the body. Forget about the "homophobic bit, thats bolics, don't know where that idea is coming from, nothing in here in the way that the other reviewer is saying, not to mention the fact that masculinity was a must within Spartan culture, or you were dead. Oh and just to mention phobic comes from the Greek word Phobos, meaning fear, now I can see how other phobias work, but saying that the Spartans had a fear of Gay people is the most absurd thing I have heard. This comic is brilliant like most of his comics, though not all have been that special, artwork is great, have a read, not for the light hearted, the movie was well made in the comic style just to mention, interesting. you may have heard about the movie "300" well this is the book. Although it sounds prepostorous it is actually based on factual events. However, one must be aware that the book ommits many facts. For example the soldiers are homophobic which s strange in an openly gay society. Nevertheless it's an exciting read.

This sits in the shadow of Frank Miller's more well known work such as The Dark Knight Returns and his Sin City series which is unfortunate since this book displays some of the best art work he has ever done and is also amongst his most intense storytelling.

You don't need to know anything beforehand to pick it up either, it’s a graphic retelling of the Spartan defense at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. and has nothing to do with any other comic book.
