My Mother Said I Never Should premiered in 1987 at the Contact theatre in Manchester and was subsequently presented in 1989 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. It follows the story of four generations of women: a great-grand-daughter, a daughter, a mother and a grandmother, grappling with social forces that threaten to split them apart as the twentieth century grows older. Widely studied on drama syllabuses, the play moves back and forth through the lives of its characters as it sets the enormous social changes of this century against the needs of individual women. This annotated edition contains the complete play text as well as a chronology of the playwright's life and work, and the playwright's own notes on writing and staging the play, including discussions with actors and directors, photographs of the original production and practical exercises developed by the playwright to take students into the meaning of the text.
