This book isn't bad as such, more obscure and disappointing given what Gaiman has written in the past (and since) high standards have been set and they just are not met with this book. It is also very dark, lacks any well defined or interesting characters and does not contain the usual Gaiman humour.
Fans of Gaiman's work won't be suprised just how good this book is but everyone else is in for a shock (and late nights up reading this thing). I always hesistate to call something perfect, but this book is, there is not one single thing wrong with this book, I loved every word.
Neil Gaiman is a consumate storyteller. He not only tells incredible stories, he creates entire worlds. The world he creates in American Gods is thoroughly immersive. There are great swathes of it that I know I haven't fully understood, but there are many different layers of meaning that can be mined to your own satisfaction. I feel American Gods warrants multiple readings and each time will be something different and more illuminating. It's not light reading but it's not drudgery. It's intelligent and exciting fun. An excellent read.
Neil Gaimen is an amazing author. The creator of the phenomenal Sandman series, he is a master of modern fairy tales. American Gods is a fantastic novel, but not his most accesible. Having said this, it's definately worth reading more than once, there a levels and layers of nuance that you miss out on the first time through. (and in my case, the second, third and fourth) It's a huge, gothic tale about old gods that have been left behind by the modern world, and the extent they'll go to to regain their former glory.

I just finished this book and I really love it. If you enjoy stories about stories, and stories within stories, you'll like this book. Packed full of mythology from just about every culture ever, journeys through obscure parts of America, mysteries and enlightenment, this is a really exciting, beautiful, clever book. I heard someone say that this was the first time Gaiman had lived up to the brilliance of his Sandman graphic novel series in fiction, and I think that's true.
I haven't read any of Gaiman's other novels but 'American Gods' is by far one of the most imaginative, well-written, intriguing and enjoyable novels I have ever read. It takes your concept of 'god' and flips it upside down, but makes it so believable that you think, "Well hey. That makes sense!". It's a fantastic read by a fantastic novelist. I can't recommend it enough.
This was the second of Neil Gaiman's novels that I have read. I wasn't as impressed as I was with 'Neverwhere' - it was a lot harder to get into. I felt for Shadow, a man who paid the ultimate price for his crimes. Once again the social commentary regarding american society was prominent and very approprite. A great read for those who like the moral high ground.
This started ok, then went nowhere, fairly quickly. This is obviously of interest to some, but maybe people who hadn't read a ton of mythology or things like that, anyway. It is not bad, just ho-hum, dead rotting girlfriend, big deal, please finish already, book, this is all too obvious. A definite disappointment from the hype and all that other stuff. It is not bad, just average.
