Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits--talents that make her attractive to the dead and undead. The ghosts of the dead aren't usually dangerous. The undead, however, are another matter in this new vampire series. Original. From The Publisher: Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking Mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with revenge in mind, she's forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection. The undead senators won't help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire--and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay. |

Not too bad. A girl grows up with vampires, and the vampire mafia no less, and eventually grows up enough to find out why all these supernatural types are interested in her more than any other run of the mill can actually do some fortune telling clairvoyant.
Good mages, bad mages, good fairies, bad fairies, vampires, wererats, satyrs, or whatever. It seems she is in line to be the uberoracle, and controlling her or having her on your side would be helpful. Especially as she she can do the slice, dice and slay pretty well now, too.

Despite a rather confusing beginning, this book quickly had me turning the pages and wanting desperately to know when book two was coming out.
Cassie is a sybil, a seer and a 'ghost whisperer' who's parents were killed by the vampire who raised her. When she discovers that, despite being on the run for the last several years, the Vampire Senate has known exactly where she's been (she's even had a vampire bodyguard without knowing) and who - and what - she is, Cassie becomes detirmined to discover the truth about her parents and her own powers. Throw in the evil vampire Rasputin, a side-kick ghost who loves gambling, and the rather sexy Mircea (one of the Dracula brothers), this is an exciting, enjoyable read that has you zipping round trying to work out just who are the bad guys...and who are the good.

As the other reviewers write, the book starts off slowly and rather confusingly, but it does turn into a rather interesting story.
I tried it as I'm a huge fan of Laurell K Hamilton and her Anita Blake novels, this is no where near as well written but was still a good example of the vampire fantasy genre. Its better than some I've read.
Overall it wasn't a bad read and I am curious to see what happens in the sequel.

First book I have read from Karen Chance and the book started very slowly but was an enjoyable if not riveting read.
Not only do you have to negotiate through good mage, bad mage, fairies, vampires, weres and other mythical characters, the mix becomes quite thick with a too fast moving plot it is quite difficult to know what is going on, combined with the overlying doubt on what Cassandra's outcome will be.
Overall not a bad read, may consider the sequel, certainly not one of the best books I have read in the genre.

A good read but not a great read. It is pretty much the same as all the others in this kind of genre but there are a few twists but they are inelegant and need some more thought. but I will be reading the sequel so that says something.
